Unhappy Help Please!!!!!!!!!

Hey,

I have a 1991 VW GTI 8-valve and forever have been having this crazy idling problem w/ it and am wondering if anyone has ever had a problem with their idle. When I refill the gas tank, the idle climbs about 150 RPM PER FILL. It does not level off. I dropped back the idle air bypass to kick it down to prevent major problems, but still am having a heck of a time trying to get it to work properly. I have replaced the wires/distributor cap and such and have redone the alternator and nearly every single sensor in the car.

Today, the car ran like crap and was stalling and didn't want to stay running. I believe it may be related to the fact that it was wet outside, but don't know if there is anything that could benefit from work or why it would stall if gotten wet. Before, I ahd a bad grounding wire to my ECU...could this be a perpetual problem caused by a short somewhere and ifso where?

Also, I have a random wire on my distributor coil assembly that is not plugged in because it only seems to control the brake light for the parking brake and nothing else. Also, the car has shorted a temp sender in a matter of days...could this all be related to a certain problem?

Thanx for any help that you guys can give me.

Re: Help Please!!!!!!!!!

You're far enough away that I'm going to assume you don't have a California car (it would say so on the emmissions sticker under the hood). Are you filling the gas tank right to the top, trying to squeeze in more to round off the price? If so, don't. It can cause problems with the tank vapor collection system & cause problems. Otherwise I'm unsure how it relates other than possibly your in-tank lift pump is failing. Do the symptoms get worse as the tank level goes down or when parked on a steep hill? You can fairly easily check to see if it's running. My brain is failing me at the moment, there is an access plate either below the lower rear seat or on the rear luggage compartment floor. You can then take off the retaining cap & lift the pump unit up a little then turn on the ignition & the pump should run for a couple of seconds.

What is the color & trace color of this wire at the coil? Which temp sender was shorted, dash gauge or fuel injection and what exactly happened?
