Question back pressure

I just bought a 2001 Dakota with a 3.9L V6. I have a K&N intake, and I was wondering if i got a cutout after the stock headers if it would have enough backpressure or if it would lose power/damage the engine. My main goal is to just make it louder. If I don't do this I might just cut off the stock muffler and replace it with a glasspack.

Re: back pressure

What do you mean "cutout"?

Of course you should just replace the muffler with a glasspack, like a Thrush.

Re: back pressure

You mean something like silent-choice, with the electrically controlled trapdoors?

Re: back pressure

I just looked at the link. It will run with those cutouts, but who knows how well.

A 3.9 doesn't sound good when it's loud. I had dual exhaust put on my 3.9 and I hate the sound of it. I'm actually willing to spend another 200 bucks to change it back, that's how bad I hate it. The drone going down the highway is annoying like you wouldn't believe.

Re: back pressure

My truck has a glasspack on it, and it works fine despite all of it's other problems, so no, putting a glasspack on your truck won't affect the way it runs.

In my opinion, it won't sound good. The only motor that glasspacks should be connected to are V8's.

My truck with 3.9 and a glasspack sounds like crap. It's horrible. You know when the muffler goes bad on something like an old Cavalier or Lumina or Celebrity with a V6, and it has that loud, ratchety sound to it, that's what it sounds like. I hate it.

If you asked me what you should do, I'd tell you to just leave it be. Put a shiny tip on it or something for looks, but your truck won't ever sound good so as long as it has a V6 in it.
