open door on a 917k fujimi kit

Hi to all,

I'm on the fujimi 917k kit, the same as p9o1r1sche, here is one photo from is thread :



I really want to open the door like on this resin kit :



But i'm a newbie and i've never did that kind of thing.

Do you think it's possible ?

Do you know where i could find an 'how-to' on this kind of subject.

Resurrected this old thread to let people know I've discovered a source of resin doors for the Fujimi 917K! The place to get 'em is www.stradasports.com. They are made by Speedline Resin, who also do doors for Fujimi GT40 and Tamiya 956/962 - US$6 a set.

I have a set of each on order so will update when they arrive. Looks like the 917 doors already have the internal ribbing moulded in saving a lot time compared to building your own. Similarly the GT40 doors have at least part of the internals that Fujimi forgot.

The Strada Sports site also has some great pics of racing Porsches at the recent Rensport Reunion. Including a few opened up 917 doors to see how they should fit

the best way to open panels and take away the least amount of plastic is to use the back side of your Exacto knife. Turn it backwards from the normal way you cut put it down in the scribed panel line with th handle tilted back at about 45°, and draw the blade backwards. you should get a curl of plastic as you go similar to a chisel in wood.. If not break the very tip end of the blade off with pliars and try again. Just keep going over the line til it cuts through.

I've just started building a Corvette C5-R and I used sewing thread to remove the hood. I'll be starting an in-progress thread in the next little while to show a bit more detail about how to do it.

I used a flexi-file, but you could take a piece of brass rod and bend it into a 'C' shape too. Just tie the thread to each end and use it like a coping saw (used for woodwork).

There's a few tricks that I found:
1. It takes about 30-60 seconds of sawing the thread back and forth before it really starts to cut the plastic. Just keep sawing until the thread heats up from friction and eventually it will start cutting through the plastic.
2. You have to be careful not to put too much pressure on the thread because it will break. I broke the thread about 3 or 4 times before I got the hang of how much pressure I could apply.
3. I used a 100% cotton quilting thread, which is a bit heavier than plain sewing thread you might find around the house. It didn't break nearly as much.

The end result is a cut with an extremely thin gap. Clean up the edge with a file and it should be good.
