I bought my son his 1st car yesterday. 1997 mustang. The steering wheel has alot of play in it.The seller said it is because it's a rear wheel drive.Never had one myself so I don't know. Can anyone advise?

um......It has nothing to do with the fact that it is "rear-wheel drive". My 98 is a bit loose after 6 years of driving....and it's fine
If it it a safety concern, I would take it to a mustang shop and get some of the Steering parts replaced/tightened. If the car is a bit lowered, It may need a "Bumpsteerkit" or "Camber casters". I would have it looked at if iti s a "concern"...

Re: loose steering
Like the previous poster, steering wheel play has NOTHING to do with rear wheel drive. Some things to consider are bad tie rod ends (too much play). You can see this by putting the front tires up on ramps, watching the tie rod ends while someone lightly turns the steering wheel. You can see any play.
A worn steering rack, which aren't that expensive. I had to replace mine with a NAPA re-built unit for around $100. Autozone is about the same. If you can do mechanical work, it's not that bad a job. You will need larger flare wrenches to disconnect the power steering lines. I replaced the tie rod ends at the same time. You'll need a front end alighment afterwards, though. LOL |

Re: loose steering
when i first got my mustang, before i even drove it, my dad said the steering was a little loose. i dont know if its b/c hes used to driving FWD cars or what. but i replaced something "forgot what it was (some joint" and it help a bit. i think it was called a rag joint or a rack joint, or something.

mine has a crapload of play in it. next stop for me is napa and i'm getting a new rag joint to fix it. if that doesn't work then flaming river will get my business. they'll have a quick-ratio power rack for fox-bodies within weeks, or so they told me.
