hAD THE SAME PROBLEM

My wife has a 98 explorer that would turn over just fine and it acted like it wanted to start so bad but just would fire up. I took it to the dealership and get ready, this one blew me away. Ther is a chip inside the ignition key that went bad and it is part of the anti-theft junk they are building into them these days. had to get a new key and have it re-programmed. I check for other opinions from several other dealerships and they say this is a common problem. Guess what it fixed the problem.

Re: It does not start anytime ???? HELP

I know what the problem is......... You bought everything but a manual. If you don't have spark, there is no reason to buy a fuel pump. That only comes on for a couple of seconds anyway. I recently bought 15 digital meters at Harbor Freight for $2.99 each so there is no reason why you can't get one. Step by step diagnostics is the way to solve problems. Start by finding out if there is any voltage at the coil pack connector and if the fuel pump turns on for three seconds when the key is turned on.

No start?

One by one.
1. Does the engine turn over?
2. Is fuel getting to the spark plugs?
3. Is electricity getting to the spark plugs?

Re: It does not start anytime ???? HELP

Look in the manual and locate the ECM relay under the hood in the distribution box. With the key on, pull out this relay and feel if it clicks off. The ECM relay has a diode in series with it to keep the system from turning on if the battery is installed backwards. The diode may be open. This diode is located close by and looks like a black fuse. I have heard two reports of this diode melting for some unknown reason.
