Sunfire steering noise

HELP please. my 2001 sunfire is making a rubbing type of noise inside the car when turning the steering wheel. You can't hear it outside the car. It is driving me crazy and I'm afraid something is going to break. Anyone solved this problem? Thanks

This will sound pretty stupid, but that's how I felt after discovering the cause of a worrisome steering noise in my '95 after days of trying to track it down. I only noticed it when making sharp turns in the parking lot. It sounded like something was loose/knocking and just waiting to fall off. Turns out the floor mat had worked its way up enough to rub on the steering assembly. May not be your problem, but check the floor mat for wear in the center and move it back to normal position before making a trip to the mechanic.

Cmitchby, I like your keep it simple philosophy. If it sounds like when you run your fingers on a nylon jacket, I would agree that it's something rubbing on the steering column, either the carpet where the column goes thru the firewall, or maybe a floormat out of place.
