Racing from a roll.

How do you start a race from a roll. I don't really street race, but when I do(like maybe 10-20 times), I have always honked the horn twice, and when there should be a third honk, we gun it. This was how the first guy that I ever raced did it, and I just took it for granted that this was the norm. From then on this was how I initiated a race once I got someones attention, and it was actually done by the other guy a few times.

But here lately when I get someones attention and I try to use this to signal go, the other guy acts like he has no clue what I am doing. So I slow down and let him catch up, and I wait for him to signal go. I sit there and wait, for a few seconds, and the other guy just takes off with no warning. How in the hell is this fair. That can't possibly be the way you would want to race.

You will accelerate slower from a rolling start then you will from a dead stop, well that is depending on how fast you are going.

Oh I know it's not the best circumstance to race, but sometimes you just can't catch someone at a light, and so it is convenient to race from a roll. But my question is, what is the most common way to start the race.

Well, simple. I pull up to a red light. If the person next to me wants to race, on green we go. That easy. I always race from a dead stop.

Lightbulb

there are two main ways to streetrace- from a roll and from a dig. from a roll is where you coast even with the other car at a certain speed (usually either 15 or 30 mph are the norm) and then you launch. if it's informal, then you do it on the third horn blow. if it's structured and you have a flagger(this is when you coast at 15mph rather than 30) you do it on the appopriate signal from the flagger. they usually do either a single flashlight flash, a raised hat and then throw it on the ground, or the usual two thumbs up behind the head, one arm down, second arm down (staging), and then both back over the shoulders as the "go" signal.

racing from a "dig" is racing from a dead stop. you should only do it like this if you know how to properly launch your car. doing this too much the wrong way is a quick way towards blowing up your third member and having to buy a new differntial or clutch. depending on your car's drive setup(FWD, RWD, AWD), and overall power, it takes a lot of finesse to find the right setup between bog and spin without killing your car, and doing be able to do it consistently. my personal preferance for dragging is from a dig. i think it is the best type of straight line, short drag race because it takes into account weight transfer, suspension setup, and spring expansion and compression rates, so a lot more goes into it than simply the power you have under the hood. what good is power if you can't hook up the power properly? it seperates the good drivers from the F&F imitators.
