1996 beretta 3.1 oil in coolant & coolant in oil

changed oil and coolant in oil-parked car.Drained rad and found oil in coolant.Gm had lots of problems with failed lower intake gaskets on 3.1/3.4L engines.Heard that Ford threw away this design and GM got it out of the garbage.I tore down to lower intake manifold and plan on removing it next. When I removed cover pans-the rockers ect.was covered with coolant/oil milkshake coating. When I remove the lower intake manifold-I plan to inspect the lower intake manifold gasket to see if it failed between a coolant/oil passage gallery. My questions are two-should I pull heads and replace head gaskets and check for a warped head/cracked block-I would hate to put all together to find out the heads were responsible and not the lower intake manifold gaskets? And 2nd question is do you thinks the main bearings survived?would hate to do all this work and find out the bearings are shot. The car never overheated before this happened.Did get a misfire code with the misfire jumping form cylinder to cylinder and then right before the oil change the coolant level in the expansion tank went down about 1 1/2 pints.I was only thinking it was only a failed lower intake manifold gasket. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.Joe

Do a compresson test on all cylinders. If any cylinders are lower than the others, pull the heads. If you're concerned about the condition of the bearings, drop the oil pan and pull a couple rod caps. This will give you a chance to clean more of the mud out of the bottom of the engine as well.
