When was the last time it had a tranmission fluid and filter change? Or if it just was done did they use the correct fluid. Sounds like slippage.

The transmission was serviced (filter & fluid change) almost a year ago (appx. 10k miles). It has been running fine until about a month ago when the tranny started acting up. It happens intermittently, and if I shift into L gear, it accelerates fine. Only when I have it in Drive does it bog down in 1st gear.

Re: 90 Auto 4unner trans issues
i have the same problem with my 91 4runner, did the oil change and transmission flush just because the trans fluid was brown looking. It did not help one bit. Since my OD off light was blinking, This meant the transmission was putting out an error code. I followed the instructions in a toyota chiltons book to look up transmisson errors and came up with error code 61, 62, and 64. It appears that error code 61 is a bad #2 vehicle speed sensor which could be giving me code 61 severed #1 solenoid and code 64 severed lockup solenoid. I will look at the trans speed sensor and give you an update to see if this fixes the problem.

Re: 90 Auto 4unner trans issues
I think we're having the same exact problem. My O/D light blinks also when the trans starts to act up. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'd hate to have to rebuild my tranny if I don't need to. Thanks in advance.

Re: 90 Auto 4unner trans issues
Just to let you know tiki, don't rebuild your tranny. The parts and the labor come out to be really expensive. In your mind you would want to belive that you are doing the right thing but you're not. I have heard many horror stories including some of my own. A lot of people claim to be experts at Toyota trannies, but the truth of the matter is, more often than not, they leave it worse than it was to begin with. Now you're shit out of about $2000. These trannies don't noramlly fail, if they do it's because of neglagence. People fail to do the transmission service until it's too late. Many times the tranny was working fine until the fluid was changed. What happens is, the new fluid is now too slick and allows for all kinds of slippage and over-drive problems. Hopefully it is just a sensor, but if it's not, do not rebuild unless you absolutly have to. I would give it the sign of the cross and sprinkle it with holy water before I would rebuild.
Your best bet is to replace it with a good used tranny. Preferably one that has been tested or one off of a salvage vehicle. Be wary, some people want to sell you a core, someone elses junk. A used one could run you anywhere between $850-$1100 depending on four or two wheel drive. Good luck. I have a hard time trusting people. A lot of people just want to make money and don't really care about you or your truck. |
