Tamiya spraint paint not in grooves

I recently painted a couple of car bodies and used Tamiya spray cans. The paint didn't seem to soak into the panel lines. Anyone know a reason for that?

Re: Tamiya spraint paint not in grooves

you'r technic is the problem

you put a too tick coat first..

refer to the faq to see how to paint correctly (2 or 3 mist coat then a wet coat)

the mist coat will cover the panel line, a wet coat will just run over it

Thanks! I did spray primer coat, mist and wet coats. However, I was impatient and did all the painting in one day. Maybe I should have let the mist coats dry more, but I thought Tamiya synthetic lacquers dried quickly enough that you could spray all the mist and wet coats in one day.

Re: Tamiya spraint paint not in grooves

yes they dry fast

I usualy do that too, but you need to use mist coat

the problem is your mist coat of paint didn't filled the panel line. you need to be sure the car is filled before the last wet coat (last wet is only to give a real glossy look, not to cover the primer)

when it's not fully dry, you will see bubble on the paint.. but you need at least 6 hours (8 to be safe) between primer and paint

but this is my technic, many ppl here will say wait for a week

also it depend of the color itselft.. I had bad luck with few paint (Telephonica blue is one of them)

make sure you give the body a wash with warm soapy water before starting to spray as a static charge in the body can cause problems like this as well

Re: Tamiya spraint paint not in grooves

Camel Yellow was the only Tamiya color I've ever had this problem happen with.

I had to spray 5-6 mist coats over 3 days to get it to stay in the panel lines on my Ferrari Mythos. Once they were filled with color and dry the wet coats didn't pull the color out.

I have similar problems on my 180 SX. The panel lines are not painted and I also got some bubbles.
I did a call to local friend who paint the real cars (don't know how do you say that in english ). He told me that the paint between (mist) coats should be so dry, that you can tuoch it with finger and don't get the finger-print. I put the back side of the finger to the inner side of the fender to check it.

Although I think that the mist coats are the most importent. They give the prime surface for wet coats.

Anyway I give 10 minutes to each mist coat.
About 15-20 minutes per wet coat.
I wait about 15-20 minutes before applying the clear coat. Between clear coats another 10-15 minutes.
