Question 01 grand am gt remote programming

Could someone please tell me how I might be able to program on my own a second remote that I purchased off of ebay for my car? It's an 2001 grand am gt. I called the dealership and they said they have to hook it up to a computer to do it, and he didn't even ask me the year or anything. I've seen quite a few things online about other cars that can be done on your own, but I haven't found anything 2001 specific. I would really appreciate any help! Thanks! I can be e-mailed at [email protected] if you know anything, I'm new to this forum and I'm not sure I'll be able to follow it right to check for replies =)

Lovely, that's just what I wasn't wanting to hear. The dealership down the road said they charge 39.99 to do it. Just my luck =\
Thanks for the reply though. =(

Hey Heather, got your email; he's correct, you do need a scanner to program it. Unless it's very important that it gets done, just do it when you have the extra bones to spare for the scanning, and you'll be in tip-top shape.

Thanks.....I was just hoping! Just my luck, oh well........didn't think an 8.00 remote would end up costing 50.00, but oh well.......it can wait, don't really need it till next winter anyhow. Have a great day!

Re: 01 grand am gt remote programming

I was told the remotes were like 40 bucks a peice , what kind of remote do you have? And it should only cost 10 bucks to program each fob.

It's a gm factory remote. I got it off of ebay. The dealership down the road said they charge 39.99 to hook it up to their computer to program it. Maybe I'll call around to different dealerships and see if I can find someone to do it cheaper.
I tried Advance auto parts, but they don't have the scanner. I know one time a guage in my car came on, and the guy there hooked it up to the computer for me for nothing. The dealership wanted to charge me 65.00........rip-offs! hehe
