'94 Explorer Acceleration
I drive a '94 Explorer V6 4.0 Liter. It has just over 80,000 miles on it and has had no need for major repairs besides the brakes.
The problem is when I go to punch the gas, it lags for 1 to 2 seconds before the engine kicks in. Also, when I put it in neutral and rev up the engine won't exceed 3,000 RPM. The indicator says it should be able to go up to 5,000 but it just won't. It stops just past the 3,000 RPM mark and begins to putt. I took apart the catylac converter today and tried it without anything on it to see if that may have been the problem. No dice. I changed the fuel filter, no difference. Then I checked the fuel line for leaks, no luck there either. Any ideas? |

Re: '94 Explorer Acceleration
First, it has a rev limiter and it will never go over 3K unless you are driving it. I would check the vacuum line that goes to the pressure regulator to see if that is off or has a hole in it. When the regulator sees a drop in vacuum indicating demand, it boosts fuel pressure to richen the mixture. If you have never cleaned your MAF sensor that could cause it. The TPS could be worn in a spot so the computer doesn't see the demand. Fuel pump may be worn so it can't produce the needed pressure. Normally about 80% of the fuel goes back to the tank so this isn't usually a problem. EGR may be sticking open.
