looking over a new car 96 gsx
I'm gonna go take a look at this 1996 gsx with 74k. Its on an auction with a minor hit, just needs the bumper, hood, fender and headlights. I can't drive it around but I can start it and maybe move a couple feet. I'm wondering if you guys have any pointers with what to look for, like signs thats somethings wrong, mainly with the engine or drivetrain? I know its hard to say when you can't drive it, but still anything? I'm really worried about crankwalk after reading all those horror stories, but at 74k, its still possible? Also, those who drive a stock gsx, what is your average gas milage? Thank alot, I appreicate all the help...

Crankwalk isn't that common. It is just exaggerated because of how bad it could be. Also gsx's usually have around 21/28 mpg.

Re: looking over a new car 96 gsx
Crankwalk is always a possibility in any vehicle; the 7 bolt dsm's are more prone to it than others, but unless the car has been abused, run without oil, etc., it is unlikely that it will happen. Worst case scenario you have to do a 6 bolt swap, you end up with a bigger turbo (14b), and you're out some money. But you'll be good to go for while after that! And that's just worst case scenario. Unless the car has a digital tachometer, it will be hard to look for signs of crankwalk without getting inside the engine. Duckydsp is right though, crankwalk is really not very common.
