Exclamation 88 F150 Will not start

I have a 1988 Ford F150 with a 4.9L 300ci motor, here is the problem, I was driving to work and the engine just quit. I tried to get it started again, but it would not. I pulled it home and checked the fuel pump to see if it was running because I could not hear it running, and it was not. So… I replaced the fuel pump and filter. It ran great for about 4 days. And once again the motor cut off out of the blue. Now I have check the fuel pump to make sure it was still working and it was, in fact it had great pressure. I have pulled the spark plugs to see if it had fire, and I did. I know its getting fuel to the motor because it will fire the motor off for about 3 sec. every once and a while, and will not start again. I am at a loss. Thanks for the help.

How does it sound when you turn it over? Does it "fight" its self? Not sure not being there, but I wonder about the timing.....or maybe your pump is weak and has just enough umph to get some gas it to it. Dont really know....sorry but good luck!

No the motor turns over good, but every once in while it sound like it’s just about to start but doesn’t. Like I said before, I was driving the truck and it just died out of the blue, almost like I had turned the key off. I have checked the spark plugs and they are firing off, and the engine is getting fuel, new fuel pump.

double check all the wiring to the fuel pumps and the relay. i think it's located behind the glovebox somewhere on your truck. also check the relay wiring ford wiring is famous for corroding and causing a voltage drop. you can jump the fuel pump from the eec conector i don't remember which terminal it is but a good manual should help you out. good luck. oh yeah check the inertia switch too it's located up by the brake pedal somewhere.

Hell... i was wondering if you have figured out this 'fuel problem'. I also was driving last week and my truck turned off. I checked and replaced everything, including the fuel pump twice. I've checked all the wiring, there is power running everywhere it needs to. It almost appears there is a MASTER reset smitch somewhere. After about 600.00 in new parts, im bashing my head on a wall. Let me know.

Re: 88 F150 Will not start

Tesha,

I am not sure what year vehicle you have. I have a '92 F150 and yes there is a master switch. On a 92 F150xlt it is behind the cowl on the passenger side (If you are sitting in the passenger seat it is closest to your right foot). There is a red button. It says right on the engine that this breaker is intended to prevent fuel leaking in an accident. It says that it can be triggered just by hitting a pot hole. (Seems silly to me, but there you have it. )

A pot hole??? I have never had that happen to me and I use it for "field" fence checks. But I guess....anyway, check your dist. cap and your rotar. My 1986 f150 just did the same, and thats what it was, I to was checking fuel pumps and everything else related to the fuel. But good luck!!
