Question Jeep Cherokee vs Ford Explorer

I have a 92 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 liter. I am thinking of purchasing an 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4.6 V8. Can anyone help me to decide if this will be a big improvement in towing? The only thing about the Jeep is that its slow going up some steep grades. I hope that the Explorer will be a big improvement.
Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Scott

Re: Jeep Cherokee vs Ford Explorer

V8 vs L6... I say the V8 will probably do better. I have an 2001 Cherokee 4.0 and 2003 Explorer w/ V8. My Explorer has plenty of power and torque eventhough the vehicle is heavier than the Cherokee. When both cars are empty the Cherokee seems to get off the line quicker but the Explorer seems to have the "umph" behind it when cruising. I say if you're towing power is what you want and need. If you're still not sure, rent one and tow. Most 02-04 Explorers have a hitch. Trying is believing!

I was told also that with 10 years of new technology the 4.6 V8 would be better. The explorer has the 3.55 rear end. Would be better with the 3.73 but my boat only wieghs 2200lbs. with trailer about 2800lbs.
Thanks for the input.

Re: Jeep Cherokee vs Ford Explorer

The 3.73 is more of a standard for 4X4, and the 3.55 is more for 2X4. For the weight you tow the 3.55 should be plenty. If you don't have lots of hills and mountains to climb you should be OK. Remember, when dealers order their cars for their stores, they usually order for the local market. For example dealers in So. California generally order 2X4 and you will not find many 4X4 vs. No. California you will see lots of 4X4 and few 2X4. In the north they go skiing and in the south they go to the beach.

Happy boating!

Re: Jeep Cherokee vs Ford Explorer

as long as either had the Tow Package i wouldn't see a problem with either towing that boat
