98 Jetta: Water leakage

My jetta has been leaking large amounts of water into the back seat floor. I have checked the doors and can not see any place the water would be been leaking... I also have a sunroof... problem arising from there? There is no water damage to the ceiling though... Any suggestions on pinpointing the problem and/or fixing?

I would say the seal around the doors or, and I hope it is not this, but maybe the seal for the sunroof might need to be replaced. Like I said before I hope its not that because it would require extensive teardown of the roof of your car.

Re: 98 Jetta: Water leakage

If you commonly park under trees where debris gets on the vehicle, it's likely a drain has been clogged. The most simple to check would be the cowl drains under the hood, I'ts possible the water is just accumulating in the back, even though it comes from the front. I don't think your car has one of the pollen filters like on the Passats, they would leak water into the passenger compartment too. As Tacuvito said theres the door seals, not just the outer, but if someone had the door panels off the vapor barrier could be damaged. Alas the sunroof, most likely & most difficult. I've read there are diferent manufacturers for your model's roofs & different proceedures for officially getting to the drains (try a search on cleaning sunroof drains). I believe two drains go forward & two rearward. I've had limited success carefully blowing some out with compressed air. Or, perhaps you can fish a wire through to dislodge any clogs. You should be able to pour water slowly into the sunroof tracks & see it flow out at the back bumper & just behind the front tires, it shouldn't pool up & overflow.

Check the sunroof drain hoses, mine fell off hose that detours water to outside (drain is on outside near door hinge) and constantly had water in front and rear

Re: 98 Jetta: Water leakage

I had this problem on my 97 jetta. The problem was my outside filters (right below the front windshield) were covered with leaves, which would cause the air conditioner to leak water at the passenger and drivers feet, and it would all flow to the back. Check those vents and hopefully the problem will go away.

Re: 98 Jetta: Water leakage

my 95 jetta had a water leak when i bought it. i found it when i lifted out the spare tire there was 2" of water laying in the well. found that the leak was coming from the rt. tail light all the water that runs off the roof runs down a channel around the trunk, under the trunk lid and dumps right acrosss the tail lights. i had a few cracks in the caulking that covers the welds and water was pouring right in the trunk felling up the sp tire well then over flowing in too the back set floor.
