2.2L stopped while driving;replaced timing chain, now no compression...suggestions?
My husbands 2.2L s10 pickup cut off while driving. My parents tugged it home and my brother came over to help us out. The truck would not start, but we could hear the fuel pump running. We eventually took the timing chain cover off and found that the plastic tensioner had broken and a piece was lodged in between the camshaft gear and the chain (we think this could have been there for quite some time though). We (meaning my brother) replaced the tensioner and chain. All points and tabs seemed to line up correctly. When we tried to start it, it would not crank. All spark plugs were checked and found to be fine. Then we determined that there does not seem to be any compression in the cylinders. My brother could not feel any air coming from any of the cylinders, and when he put a piece of paper towel in one of the spark plug holes, the paper towel stayed where it was. Does anyone have any suggestions. We're afraid that the valves might be bent, but it would be great if you guys have any lower-cost solutions. Thanks all.

Re: 2.2L died, replaced timing chain, now no compression...suggestions?
Well if you have no compression there are only a few possbilitys that it could be. 1. A really badly blown head gasket 2. the valves in which you said. or the worse a possible crack in the head or worse, the block but if that was the case than you would probably still be getting compression in at least one of the cyclinders unless there was a giant crack all the way down the middle (not likely). Or it could be as simple as one of the pins that hold the cam sprocket have broken off and screwed your timing all together the simple check for that would be to take the sprocket off and see if the pin is sill there that would be my first check. Good luck

Double check all your index marks too.
I know that on the 4.3 harmonic damper the wacky funsters at the factory put two different index marks and only one of them is TDC, the other is a dirty lie. |

The 2.2L is an interference engine, you have bent valves
