Cool Turbo 6 series (E-24)

Hello all,
I'm a new member & would like to find out how many Turbo 6'ers were made?

I recently bought a low mileage '85 745i Turbo. This is a Euro "Grey Market" vehicle. I removed the head & confirmed that it was indeed cracked (the last owner was warned to not continue driving the car while overheating by his mechanic, a good BMW Bolt-head pal of mine.)

I'm going to replace the head w/a recent rebuilt head from a '86 635is.

I had to swap to the rebuilt head the original cam & also the stainless steel exhaust manifold studs as well.

I intend to put this Turbo Motor w/computer & wiring harness in my '80 633 csi.

(I know, I know, "Why do that on a 4-speed, old lackluster suspension 6 series?" My 6'er already has a 3.5 motor from a wrecked '86 635csi as well as the upgraded suspension and a great 5-speed tranny.
I also put a subtle yet smooth Body kit and a very BRIGHT RED paint job.)

I did this real cheap! I have invested a total of $850.00 for both the 745i & rebuilding the 635is head.

I like to do the work myself on my cars as much as possible (except rebuilding trannies... shudder) but I really like to save money.

Oh yeah, the 7-series is very nice looking w/Euro bumpers & even electric seats in the back! I'm going to put my 3.5 motor in there & make it a cruising car. My 6'er will only be weekends.

I found it very expensive for just the Turbo's on the internet!
I have read other threads re: Superchargers vs. Turbo's. Boy' I wish I had that kinda' dough.
But I have to tell you it will be great "from the factory looking."
I don't like the "aftermarket look".

When I have my throttle body slightly modified, I'm hoping to increase 70-75 more HP than a regular 3.5 litre motor.

Should I look into modifying the Computer also?

Does this make my car still only "Bluebook" value?

(Regardless, I don't anticipate selling it any time soon. My 13 y.o. son can't wait to till he's old enough to drive it!)

Turbo on an e24 is a dang good deal

Here is my e24.

I have installed a MAF and Cartech RR FPR in preparation of installing a Turbo.

OE is
3430cc M30
Motronic
DME II
92x86, 8.0:1
185bhp/5400rpm
214lb.ft/4000rpm

I own a dyno so here is the output at the wheels.

HP loss in transmission and differential 25%
So 222 HP at shaft is the result.

I am using the J C. chip also, a 3.71 ratio, with 265 Getrag.

The sweet spot of the m30 is now at 2200rpm where it was at 2800rpm.

That is the point where the rumble of the exhaust resonates in frequency with the intake. On the unmodified it is only seen on the cold mornings when the fuel system adds a little more fuel and the cold air is giving it's all.

I really like it.

Here is my Metric Mechanic prepared tubo head.

I will retain the 059 ECU amd use the RR FPR to enrichen the mixture.

I have the early M102 engine 12 psi bypass valve.
I have the later m102 KKK27 turbo.

I plan to try to run without a intercooler on advise of many BMW tuners.

I use this car to tow a mobile dyno so I need a torque monster for my customers entertainment. 6 cylinder 500 horse power NFW.

Heck I even sell the R/F motor mount you will need to install the turbo exhaust.

Later,

I'm glad you sent a very informative thread & most importantly the pix were great. I now have even more enthusiasm.
I'd like to know why the BMW Tuners don't like the Intercooler?
Also, where to order JC chip?

Thanx,

a fellow "Bavarian-Machines-Wingnut"

I have been very busy

so the reason is the same on all cars it is a big air catcher.

If you can live without it, why add to the drag ratio.

Also the intercoolers adds to the possible lag since most are remote mounted.

If you decide to use a BMW 745i turbo, I sell a R/H mount to provide a little space.

Later,
