Drifting event in Georgia?

Batlground was thinking of throwing an event in conjunction with Import Atlanta at the Gwinnett Co. fair grounds. It would be held in June or July...depending on who and how many people want to show up.

If anyone is interested in attending/participating or sponsoring this event please e-mail [email protected]
If you have any advise or ideas on this please e-mail as well.

Try saying something constructive, 1via. If that's at all possible for you.

In order to hold a drift event, you're going to need quite a bit of cash behind you, a very tolerant event insurance company (remember, what a drift event entails is more or less wild young men intentionally throwing their cars out of control), and experienced safety workers.

You'll need to check local ordinances on things such as sound (many short tracks, for instance, now require their divisions to come under a decibel limit because the tracks are withing residential limits) and you'll need a security detail.

My advice would be to approach a local sports car club or your regional chapter of the SCCA to get their involvement. If you cooperate with a club like that, you can get them to handle many of the messy details while you do promotional work to get event sponsorship, prize money, concessions, contingencies, etc.

For sponsorship, you'd actually be best off to approach a local speed shop or even an import dealership. If you have a Nissan or Toyota dealership in the area, try presenting the idea to them and explaining that many of THEIR cars would be in attendance and it would positively effect their sales if they put their name on your event.

Don't even bother trying to keep it "hardcore" or "underground" or any of that other poser bullshit that people say is better. Go as professional and as corporate as you can and your event will be a success. Expand the event to include a car show. Get a local celebrity (like a newscaster or radio personality) to attend. Write to import personalities asking them to attend and sign autographs. Drift, drag, show, magazine writer. Doesn't matter. Concentrate on getting people through the gate and into the stands to watch the event so that you can post a big enough purse that you'll get plenty of cars.

Trust me. This is the way to go.

Thanks for all of the advise!!! We have the cash to back up the event. Our insurance company is already handled. i think the date will be July 17th at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. We are holding this event in conjunction with Import Atlanta, NOPI and Lookoutdrift. We had an excellent dyno day at our shop on Feb 22nd. I think it was handled very well and definately professionally (of coarse I'm biased...I organized the event). Here is a link to some pics and write ups on the dyno day. We had about 300 people show and we dynoed 40 cars.

here are a few aerials of the place. Sorry for all the watermarks, but it was the only site that had good pics., but you get the idea.

This is the actual parking lot that we would use. It is paved now where all of the gravel is to the left.

The point to this event is to keep it cheap for the amateurs. I also plan to have an open session.
