sundog anyone? (pic)

i love stuff like this...i have no idea why i know what that is what its called. see the false sun? the false sun is on the right-there was one on the left as well, but there was a darn tree in the way. for those that dont know: the viewer is at the 22 degree point within the sun, viewer, and false sun triangle. i love science. when i was taking this picture my roommate was like WTF are you doing.

Re: sundog anyone? (pic)

That's pretty cool except how does that work. Why does it happen?

Re: sundog anyone? (pic)

this occurs when the sun is low in the sky. see how it is nearing the horizon? clouds must be present. the clouds must have a specific density (spacing of the ice crystals-what clouds are made of), they dont have to be a specific type. altitude would affect this-also, the season we are in.
light is reflected off of these crystals and shown to us at this specific angle stated earlier. my explanation isnt extremely clear, this is just off of the top of my head. something i learned when i was 10 or so. (i am a geek, OK) try a search.

Probably because you were standing in the middle of the fucking road with only a camera for protection.
