Smile Honda Civic, Volks Gti, Integra, Prelude vs. 3000gt Vr4

I'm buying a car next month ... i have about 7g's to spend and i've looked and looked ... Integra's, Rx7's(2nd gens), Honda's (preludes, civics, ect.) ... i'm not really too into toyota's, except for the Supra but that's way out of my price range. I've never really been a Mistubishi fan either ... until i laid eyes (on the car itself and specs) on the Mitsubishi 3000gt vr4. Basically i've been searching for a car that would straight out Smoke my friends. Will i be able to out on my friends in a 1/4 strip lol? Their cars are the following w/ some estimated hp #'s.
- Honda Civic Hatchback - 150hp v-tech
- Honda Civic Coupe - Stock ... i'm guessin 120hp? i dont really know.
- Honda Prelude - Stock
- Acura Integra - 175hp
-Volkswagen Gti - 222hp
- Honda Civic Coupe #2 - Somewhat modded, under 150hp though
Well, the plan is, this summer, we're taking all our cars to the track and race the 1/4 . The fastest affordable car i could find is the 3000gt vr4, not only is it fast ... but it also looks SOOOOOO DAMN GOOD! lol I understand newer models come with 320hp stock. I'll most likely get a 1992 Mitsubishi 3000gt Vr4 since that's all i can find. Is the 92' Vr4 320hp stock or 300hp stock? Should i even really worry about my friends beating me lol? Lots of people say that i shouldnt ... that i should worry about other cars, like the Nissan 300zx, Toyota Supra, Eclipses (since they can be easily modded), and other cars in the Vr4's class. Well i dont really worry about those lol i just wanna eat Hondas for breakfast. Can i put a whuppin on my friends or what? lol oh yea and i found this 400hp package (just under 1g ) ... is this a good buy? k thank you guys/grlz peace! -> http://www.turboimports.com/400hppackage.html

an N/A 5-speed will take out the hondas just fine, a VR-4 will be overkill. If you do get a VR-4, the first mods should be gut the precats and buy an MBC for $14 and crank up the boost to 14.5 psi, but no more than that. Downpipes will give you a nice gain, but dont spend money on a catback exhaust, make that one of your last things on your mod list as the VR-4 exhaust is already not restrictive at all.

Agreed! You'll smoke the Hondas... And I believe a '92 VR4 has 300 hp stock. Hope that helps....

Re: Honda Civic, Volks Gti, Integra, Prelude vs. 3000gt Vr4

I agree with everything said.
If you get a vr4, hondas will be crying by the time you hit 2nd gear. I have fun racing hondas and tryin not to go over 3000rpms in each gear. Trust me, all the cars you mentioned will be over a second and a half behind you in the quarter. 91-93vr4s have 300hp stock, and the later years have 320. As far as upgrades, what was said before was good advice. There are plenty of mod guides out there that are good 2 follow. www.3si.org has one listed somewhere on their site with approximate hp gains listed with each part.
Personally, I would start with guttin the precats, getting an intake, downpipe, and boost controller(make sure you get an aftermarket boost gauge as well, the stock boost gauges are highly inaccurate and if you turn up the boost without a boostgauge you run the risk of killing your engine). Also, if you get the boost controller, stay at 14.5psi as was said before, don't turn it up any further then that, the stock y-pipe will blow off and your fuel system will also not be able to cover the demands put on it(you'll do damage).
Also as was said before, the stock catback is good enough, unless you want a louder sound, there is no reason to get an aftermarket one until you go further with the upgrades. The stock exhaust has been proven capable of high 11 sec 1/4s.

Good luck finding your car and happy modding when you do.

you sound like me a long time ago, only i was not even considering civics and such. but i was looking at preludes until i found out how much a vr-4 costs.

a stock vr-4 of any year should destroy any of the other cars listed. if i am not mistaken, a second gen vr-4 is faster in the 1/4 mile than any honda/acura ever produced and intended for street use... that includes the NSX. don't get me wrong, the NSX is much better handeling than a vr-4 but if you are talking 1/4, i believe the vr-4 was faster. they are also faster stock for stock than rx-7's i believe (the newest ones, 3rd gen i think, the older ones are not even close). in both cases not by much. as for skylines, supras, 300zx's, it should be a driver's race.

you can get close to 400 hp at the crank for about $100 if you really want to. buy some cheap ass intake that works just as good as a k&n but without the name. gut all the cats, buy a manual boost controller and turn it up to 14.5 psi or maybe even higher if you are running mostly race gas (seeing as you were talking about the track). the boost controller alone will put you up to about 355 hp at the crank.

the 91 - 93 vr-4's are 300 hp and they are 320 for the rest of the years but the only reason for that was that the 2nd gen cars were running 2psi more boost, this would not matter at all with a boost controller.

as for what year to get, i would say a late 92 or a 93. they are cheap, they have the 25 spline output shaft on the tranny, and they still have the 5 speed which is better geared for most drag applications.

these cars are expensive to mantain though, unlike the other cars on your list. if you do not have that much money left over, do some minimal power mods like the ones that we have all been suggesting, and save the rest for when you need a new clutch or something.

Re: Honda Civic, Volks Gti, Integra, Prelude vs. 3000gt Vr4

ps, I just checked out that link, and its claims are a bit ridiculous, its "400hp" package is:intake, downpipe, and catback. This kit doesn't include a boost controller. There is no way you would have 400hp with just that kit.
If you want to follow a modding guide, try checking out these:
go to www.3si.org and click on mods on the right, then choose between power or performance mods.

another good site:
http://www.dynamicracing.com/customer/home.php?cat=49

or just mix and match, you can check out:
www.3sxperformance.com

you might want to research which brands are best for you, for instance, as far as downpipes go, some have flex sections to prevent cracks and exhaust leaks if the engine moves a bit, others eliminate one of your precats as well as the main cat.
2ndly, boost controllers for example, some are manual, some are electronic, some are easy to tune, some are not. Some allow boost surges, others hold boost very well, so do some research and find what is in your price range and have the options you want.

www.stealth316.com, www.3si.org, and this website provide tons of valuable information, just search around or ask.

Wow, thx alot ppl - the info has been very useful lol i even saved it with notepad, very good info. I'll most likely buy my car off the net, from sites such as www.autotrader.com - reason being there arent that many vr4's around my area->Lotz of 3kgt SL's no vr4's lol well there was one ... on an ad from a car dealer i was checkin out. It said 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 Spyder Twin Turbo 6-SPD MT AWD - White 25,032 miles. Call for Details!!!! lol so i call for details, thinking the car would maybe cost ... no more than $15k and boy was i wrong. I'm like: yea hi, im interested in the 3000gt Vr4 - how much u askin for it?lol Dude said: 32-8 ... and i replied: as in $32,000? He's like: yea it's a vr4 spyder. lol and im like ... lol ... k thank you! um, so yea basically i plan to buy my vr4 off the net, since i can find none around here. I'm willing to spend up to 7g's (91-93) or up to 9g's (94-99) but that's kinda rare i guess. I mean at first ... what attracted me was the specs + price lol ... but then wow! They look unlike any other car I'm really into 3rd Gen Mazda Rx7's, and i've found a few around in the 9k range, but i hear the repair costs are insane ... and that there will be alot of repairing lol, so i think that'll be a future car on my list. For now it's the Vr4, and hopefully i'll have it by then end of April - and yea i do have the extra money for repairs, but repairs on the VR4, are they very costly or affordable ... or somewhat affordable lol? Will there be alot of unavoidable repairing? Should i sue the 400hp package for false advertisement lol jk - k thx alot guys/grlz i'll be on later!
Oh yea i read that the spoiler on the vr4's rise after the 50mph mark, and sumttin opens up in the front too. In what year models is this mod included in? ty!
