Car smokes above 4k rpm
Hi,
I got an 88 hatch and i just swapped a D16A6 90 CRX SI engine along with a 5 speed DX tranny to replace the 4 speed. Anyways, the car runs fine and idles nice. But when you rev the car past about 4k rpm you start to see bluish smoke. I replaced the head gasket b4 i did the swap because it had a blown head gasket. So im pretty sure thats fixed because there is no more white smoke pouring out. Anyways, I tried Smoke Away to try and help the problem it only helped a tiny bit. I use 10W-30 Castrol engine oil (for cars with over 75000 miles) and I put a can of Smoke Away in also. Been driving like that for about 4 days now and I still have the problem. My question is have any of you had any success using any of these smoke away products? I dont need all the smoke gone just remove as much as possible. Im starting to think the only way to remove all the smoke completly is by replacing the engine. I dont really care about the smoke since it only happens when you floor the car, so if an engine replacement is the only solution then ill just keep this one and possibly replace it for an LS or B16 later in the future. Thanks

Re: Car smokes above 4k rpm
Note: ALL engines burn some oil @ high RPM's. I would guess the valve seats are carboned up/worn. When you repalced the head gasket was the head inspected by some one? If not that was your 1st mistake.
Honestly IMO, NO additive does what it's makers claim it to do. If these products are so good they would be in your engine from the factory. I've heard good claims about Engine Restore(sp?) but once the damage has been done NO chemical will fix it. Kinda like a manual trans grinding & the person drains the 10w-30 engine oil for a heavier 75w-90 gear lube, little do they know they're making problems worse then they already are. |

Re: Car smokes above 4k rpm
yes could be something like rings or valve stem seals
ive also heard good things about this "restore" product from others .. and ive personally used it in very high mileage cars with good results (embarassing but true ) .. using a heavier weight oil can sometimes help higher mileage engines .. like a 20w50 .. hence questionable products like "motor honey" which are like cold molasses rislone has a good viscosity enhancer... it has the word "ring" somewhere in the name... a lot of these products .. and the "high mileage formula" oils .. contain seal conditioners that cause various things to swell in the hopes of improving the situation.. (which in the long run may or may not be so good for the motor)... uhm...low mileage JDM ZCs are pretty cheap ... but that probably isnt what u want to hear |

Re: Car smokes above 4k rpm
the engines only got 80k miles so im guessing the owner b4 me probably beat on it pretty good.
im gonna try using 15w-50 motor oil like somone suggested. they use it their 4th gen. says its better for a worn down engine.

Re: Car smokes above 4k rpm
u could also say a little prayer and check the crank case ventilation system ..
hoping that excessive crank case pressures are causing ring sealing problems |

yea dude, your best bet would be to take the head back off and get it checked out at a machine shop. You probly wont be happy with what they find either. Same exact thing happened to me last week. Replaced my headgasket (and every other gasket on the head) after the previous owner blew it. Got it all back together and it still burned coolant. Took the head to school with me to find out that its .009" out of spec. It currently sits in the garbage.
