97 Camry Odd engine noise

Over the last 2 months I have had this odd engine noise. It's difficult to describe. Only thing I can relate it to is the sound that crickets make at night. Problem occurs when the car is fully warmed up and is present while in park/stop/drive. When accelerating the noise increases in frequency.

Anyone know what I could look for? The noise is quite loud and is annoying. I notice it from the right side of the engine compartment.

Thanks in Advance.

stellar x,

Since it makes the noise while stopped too and increases when you accelerate, my first guess would be an old belt that dried out a bit. Try spraying WD-40 on the belts one at a time to see if you can identify the suspect belt. Once identified, replace it. Caution-only use WD-40, do not use any silicone sprays. Spray the belt with the engine off and then start it. Stand back so the belt does not fling the silicone on to you. It's not dangerous, but it can mess up your clothes though I wouldn't recommend getting it flung into your eyes.

Good luck.

Mike

Wouldnt WD40 causr the belts to slip as it is a lubricant? You mentioned not to use silicone sprays but mentioned to me to stand back as "silicone" would spray up at me.

Re: 97 Camry Odd engine noise

odds are you have worn drive belts, try tightening them, but if original . should replace them, also, check and see if the engine timing belt has been replaced, recommended every 60 k , can push it, but if it breaks, you are stranded, usually drive belts are replaced when timing belt is replaced

stellar x,

I misspoke when I called WD40 a silicone. It is not a silicone. I just didn't want you to fling the stuff in to your eyes. If you stand on the passenger side fender you can actually spray the stuff on while the engine is running but it will fling on to the front of the car and you will have to wash the stuff off. It might also remove some of the wax there but won't hurt the paint. I said to avoid silicones because they break down rubber. WD40 does not. I have been spraying WD40 on my belts (and also my cv joint boots) as a preventive measure at each oil change. I saw this on a TV show about a dozen years ago. I have the original belts on my 94 Camry with no noises and no signs of any dryness. I did however, change the timing belt at 60,000 miles.

If you want, buy a stethescope (cheap) and check the bearings on the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioner compressor.
