Question Automatic tranny in VR6 started to hang in gear occassionally, ideas....???

My wife's VR6 JettaIII started to hang in 3rd occasionally today. I know my way around cars as I build race engines (V8s). The tranny seems mechanically fine and the fluid/pan were clean, and it shifts smooth when it does shift.
Is there some type of sensor that may of gone bad??

Any advice is appreciated,
Rob

Do you have the 096 or 01M transaxle? The easiest way to identify is the 096 has a dipstick for checking the fluid level. I've seen TSB's (Group 01, No. 97-01 & 97-05) on harsh shifting and delayed upshifting for the 01M involving improper throttle angle adjustment. It's fairly complex diagnosis & requires a VAG scanner to check out.

Thanks for the reply. It's the 096. The problem is very intermittent, only occurs sometimes...

I looked into those TSB's again & they do relate to any 4 speed that uses the Digimat 2.1 Transmission Control Module, which should include your 096. Unless you have access to a VAG or a simulator like the VAG-COM, you would have to have it checked out by a dealer. If you do, mention those TSB numbers & the possibility that the throttle angle setting may be incorrect.

Technical Service Bulletin. It's not quite like a recall, just a note from the manufacturer to their technicians of a common problem & the fix, no warranty implied.
