84 camaro question

I bought a 84 camaro and a 84 firebird, both have 305's in them. My main project i'm working on is making a 41 plymouth pick up truck into a hotrod. my plan is to use one of the 305's, probably the one from the camaro to put in my truck. I recently finished removing the engine from the camaro and i'm goin to rebuild it. I just wanted to know what i'm going to have to keep for wiring or what else i need to keep from the camaro to have the engine run. right now the engine looks pretty cluttered up with all kinds of crap. i'd defeinately like to get rid of it.
any help would be greatly appriciated.
thank,
Jeff

Re: 84 camaro question

well, depends, are you just using the block and heads, and then set it up for a carb????? or are you using the intake off the camaro engine (either the TPI or TBI) If its carb that your after, just take everything off, strip it down to the longblock, buy a TBI intake, set it up and run with it, for the stock setup you need all the sensors, all the wiring harness, the computers, and all that good stuff. im gonna need more info on what you intend to do to get any more specific than that.

i'm looking to upgrade the engine and put a victor jr intake with a edlebrock carb and headers. do i need to keep the computer. i don't care about any of the sensor and i definately don't want to keep it stock. the engine isn't fuel injected and i want to keep it carburated. i was just woundering what i need to salvage from the camaro, "like the computer or wiring harness"? basically i'm just asking what i need to keep and what i can get rid of and still have it run in my truck.
thanks,
Jeff

Re: 84 camaro question

if your just setting it up for carburation, and not worred about emmissions, you dont need any harness, computer, or sensors, trash everything cept the block, whats in it, and the heads, and build it like an old school small block.

so if i get rid of all the wiring harnesses and computer, that won't effect how the distributer works or any other stuff? whats a good rebuild kit for this engine? what parts of rebuild should i get done professionally?
would it be worth it to get it bored out as to cost and hp gain?
as to the 305 in the firebird, will alot of those parts fit on the camaro 305, namely the transmission? the tranny i have on the camaro engine is a manual, i'd like to switch that with the one from the firebird because it is an automatic if it's possible. i greatly appriciate any of the help that i get, thanks
Jeff

Re: 84 camaro question

you might have to get a regular distributor, but i dont know off the top of my head if the one in the camaro is an 84, i dunno. as far as what to get done professionally, i would have any machine work, or balancing, or cleaning up of the journals, but as far as taking it down, and putting it back together, i think you can probly handle that. as far as boring it out, a few extra cubes never hurt anything, especially on a 305. as far as parts comminality, the drivetrain between the two F-bodies are identical. so everything will swap over. including the trans.
