4l30e tranny question

im getting ready to change my tranny fluid and was just wondering
if there is a simple way to flush out the system and if the tourqe converter has a drain plug on it 1994 rodeo

That's a good question, does anyone know if there is a drain plug on the TC on a 2000 Rodeo w/3.2L?

I haven't looked closely yet as I am a new owner of a '00 Rodeo, but is there an external cooler on these transmissions? Prolly could end up taking off the return line from the cooler and have it dump into a 5gal bucket while I use my 12V oil pump from Grainger to pump in new ATF while the engine is running. Should do an adequate flush of the fluid. Gotta drop the pan and change the filter first, of course.

Please keep in mind, if you only drop the pan and or pull a line you will only get out about 4qts of the 9 that are in the tranny. This is fine if you plan to do it this way ever 15k or so. If you want a full flush, you will need to take it to a quick lube type of place or a dealer. My dealer chages 90 bucks for the flush. They flush with 9qts, and then flush again with 9 more qts. 90 bucks every 2 yrs is a heck of a lot cheaper then 3500.00 for a new tranny.

Good question about a TC drain plug.. I never did check for one on my 2002. IIRC- there is an inspection plate at the bottom of the bell housing to peek at the TC, but I'd have to crawl under to verify its there for sure. My experience is many newer cars dont have a drain plug on the TC anymore. I never liked the idea of messing with them anyway. You break it, strip it, or dont get it to seal & you'll be pulling the tranny to replace the TC . Do a complete ATF swap on the 4L30E atleast every 30-35K, and they last. A couple drain/fill cycles once a year thru the main pan works well too, but like Ryan says, if you can get a dealer to run 18+qts thru it for $90, you can't beat that! Do a pan drop & filter change at 60Kmi. I would NOT let anyone but the dealer do a "flush" or pan drop while you are under warranty. It's not worth the hassle if you wind up with a warranty issue on it.
