4L30E Transmission Question (for 528i)

BIG trouble.

99BMW E39, 4L30 Transmission (is that the right tranny?)

It's been in the shop for two weeks now. It's been slipping out of gear into neutral. Actually, according to the mechanic, it's PUTTING itself into neutral or downshifting drastically.

I had it rebuilt first. Everything mechanical and electrical on the tranny has been replaced. New Torque Converter, clutch, seals and everything. Then we went to all five selenoids, and the speed sensor.

After the car and tranny warm up sufficiently, about 7 miles or so of driving, it drops out. Then, if you turn it off and on, it'll reset, leaving the codes stored. He figured that out with the computer connected while driving it. As long as the codes are stored, it will drive just fine. Once you clear them out, it starts over again.

The guy at the dealer told him that the codes: (111 and 100) point directly to that speed sensor, which we replaced yesterday and thought it was fine. Tells me today it's happening again. BMW says replace the tranny. The tranny has been completely rebuilt in the shop.

Tomorrow, we are going to replace the neutral safety switch as the AAMCO guy told me three weeks ago. The shop wants to replace the computer too. I think thats too damn expensive and would have to be reprogrammed at the dealer too. The shop will also check all of the numbers on the tranny and give those and the numbers from the car to see if the tranny has been replaced before or if it's even the right tranny.

Havent told the wife everything cause she just got laid off and really doesnt need anymore stress, and of course she wouldnt understand it anyway. But she wants her damn car back.

Any tranny-smart folks here?
