Check ENG light After hitting big puddle

Well the weather here in Hawaii isn't so great right now, but us Xterra owners are having alot of fun. I work on a Army Air Field and the back side floods during heavy rains. I hit a very large wash puddle and now my check engine ligth is on. After hitting the water the truck started to run ruff and was acting like it was misfireing. I limped it to the parking lot and shut her down for a few min.

After about 5 min i started her back up and she is running fine, but the check engine light is still on. Am i correct that i need to remove the battery power for a little while and it will go out? And what could have caused this, maybe it was a little to deep for the speed that i hit it and it retarded the fan? Or could i have affected the engine timeing for a breif second when i hit the water and it just needed to rest after shutting down. Just has me worried, everything under the hood is in place, she runs fine now. Well hopefully the power lines will get knocked down again on Kam HWY and i get to ride home thru Dole pineapple fields to get home again. Hehe while all the other suckers get to drive around the island to get home.

PS. Xterras rock!!

Re: Check ENG light After hitting big puddle

Well i left the battery unhooked all night but the check engine light is still on. Nissan dealer wants me to bring it in, they wont tell me how to shut it off over the phone. The truck is running fine, anyone have some suggestions on how to turn the light off?

A better option might be to buy/borrow a code reader and see what's wrong first. Might be pretty simple.

I'm worried you may of gotten water in your intake system. Very bad! Immediate sensor that don't do well with water are the air intake temp sensor, and the mass airflow sensor. Then water gets into the fuel system from there, if it even got that far. Sounds like you need a snorkel.

i live in florida and just last week had the same problem... going through water... it turns out the engines electrical system is porely sealed and water got into it.. once it got there it shorted out the fuel pump... so i had to replace the fuel pump to get it running again. the light was still on. the dealer took the car unpluged the o2 sesnor wiring and let it sit inside their bay for 2 days to let it dry out... that fixed it... needless to say the dealer blames all the problems on the water. i called nissan to bitch about the fact that they claim the xterra as being an "off-roading" truck, but in my opinion if it was truly an off roading truck such as they claim...it could go through alittle water without the truck going to shit

Re: Check ENG light After hitting big puddle

Depends on a lot of things: What sort of water, the depth, the speed you hit it, and if you had any business being in it in the first place, etc.
The 02 sensors are pretty exposed, as they are on most any vehicle. The fuel pump, well, I don't know how you managed to kill that. Had my Xterra in clear water halfway up the doors in a river crossing and not once had a problem. The only time I did have a problem was after spending a couple of minutes slogging around in a door-deep slurry-filled mudhole, the next day the alternator tried to die on me, but a good rinsing with a hose revived it.
