Progress on 2 projects: Nismo Skyline 350GT and 350Z Track

Have started a couple more Nissans, I just got the Nismo Skyline and my friend just bought a 1:1 Track Edition so that's some inspiration for what was going to be my stock Z...having already built a Nismo.

The Skyline will be basically OOB, I did grind out the lower fascia grilles w/my Dremel, an easy 5 minute job. I'll add mesh and a blocker panel so you can't see the chassis mount. Paint is House of Kolor Majik Blue pearl. It's not clearcoated yet, and the pictures show it a bit lighter than it really is. It's kind of like a "cobalt grape" color, very vivid and looks good w/the Nismo graphics.

The Z car will be 2-toned, the upper body will be black, like the BRE version my friend built. His 1:1 Track will be getting Nismo body package and it's Silverstone Gray will be two-toned w/a black upper as well. So this will be a bit of a test to make sure of the combo...even if the color is different...I had paint left over from my stock Skyline 350GT. So far the LeMans Sunset has been applied, w/o any clear. House of Kolor paints are dead flat until you clearcoat them. I shot the stock rims w/a couple shades of Alclad to make 'em a bit cooler than stock. I'll wait and see what my Aoshima 19's look like on it whenever they arrive. The seats will have some body color as well. Otherwise this will be mostly stock...check out my faux-Nismo grille, I cut out two of the grille bars and painted what was left. Looks pretty good for a free technique.

It's House of Kolor sold in hobby bottles by Black Gold, airbrushed using Gunze Mr. Thinner. That's a little secret few people know about, as it allows much better spraying w/o the side effects of plastic etching. The Skyline etched last night using regular lacquer thinner; I sanded it smooth today and reapplied the paint w/the different thinner...I'm trying to conserve it as I haven't received a replacement bottle yet. It's been hard to find for years. I ordered some today, I only just recently found a source who has it.

Black Gold does offer the paints in spray cans as well. If you can afford the full House of Kolor paint chip book, it's a great reference and you can order those colors from Black Gold.

Sweet!!!
I like the idea of a bicolored 350Z! Personnaly, I would have prefered an aluminium upper body... But I bet it will look great! (no risk!...)

That's a great tip. I am getting ready to spray Sunset Pearl on my Supra, so this will be very helpful. Do you use regular Mr. Thinner or the Color Leveling Mr. Thinner? I'm assuming thinned with the same ratio as with lacquer thinner, correct?

The Majik Blue on the V35 looks great. Might have to go grab me a bottle.

Thumbs up

Looking good !
Those Nismo Skylines are really becoming popular & very similar to the 350z.

Later, Mike.

My Mr. Color Thinner is very old; I've just ordered some more, I didn't get the color leveling stuff. I hope the stuff I've ordered is the same as what I had in the past! It's worth a try, it really makes the paint flow more like enamel w/o giving it more plastic-harming chemicals. I thinned the paint to a consistency that flowed well in my airbrush, perhaps a bit thicker than I would shoot clear, as the color goes on dead flat. It's smooth, not grainy.

I'm looking forward to seeing these two with clear coated and polished paintwork. The colours look great.

More progress

I've finished the interior and chassis, and have started the clear coat/two-tone process on the Z. There are a few more coats of clear and lots of polishing ahead. So far I'm happy w/the paint scheme. It should look good on a 1:1 as well.

The Nismo Skyline progresses further...it's got two good coats of Tamiya clear, which caused the previously etched surface to reappear... so I smoothed it out and now have an entire can of Gunze Mr. Topcote on it-partly to seal in the decals. The Gunze is some nice clear as well, dries really fast and feels slick as teflon, prior to any polishing. This and the Z should be ready for a show on Saturday. I'm really digging this color combo...the black parts of the decals are a bit hard to see, but for a darker color, it's very intense.
