Ive got a 99 Passat 1.8 Turbo 4 cly. with automatic trans. The car is a great car to drive and like it except for all the prolems ive had. The car has 106,000 miles on it now and with the factory warrentee done, im getting nervous. Id like to know how many people with a simular car have had this many problems. Ive got a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT with 117,000 miles and I have had to do nothing but change the oil and put tires on it. The Passat is in California with normal driving conditions, combo of highway and city driving. Here is a list of the problems.
Ignition controll box 66k (not warranteed)$430 asst. engine oil leaks 70k (warr.) oil leaks on valve cover and timing chaingasket 82k (warr.) water pump 82k (warr.) coolant hose leaks to trans. 82k(warr.) steering wheel clock spring 88k (not warr.) $200 Oil pump 92k (warr.) thank God!! MAF sensor connector 106k (not warr.) $300 Tie rod ends 106k (not warr.) $200 did it myself except for alignment Id like to hear from other owners on thier probs. Thank God for the VW 100k engine warrentee!!! Thanks! |

Re: 99 Passat 1.8 has anyone had this many probs???
I am also one of the many fools who bought into the 99 passat. I have had the water pump problem and the tie rod problem and the radio problem and the ball joint problem and the rough idle problem....the list goes on. I have 125,000 miles on mine and pathetic hopes for trading it in and freeing myself from this money pit. Mine has a new mystery problem: it likes to jerk itself off the road. When I accelerate, the steering wheel will intermittently jerk to the right. More than three trips to repair shops later and nobody knows what is wrong with it. They all want to replace the axle, rack and pinion, power sterring pump and related accessories. Any ideas?

All 98-01 passats have alot of problems.
If you maintain you car and spend the money needed on it, it will last a long time. |

I have a 99 Passat 1.8t with 117k on it. Other than normal maintenance, I've had no major problems to speak of. Check out www.passatworld.com/forums for allot of good info.

Re: 99 Passat 1.8 has anyone had this many probs???
I have a '99 1.8 and almost no problems at 78k miles. Did replace the timing belt recently. Front brakes at 52K - not bad, but expensive with rotor.

Re: 99 Passat 1.8 has anyone had this many probs???
Most common cause of a miss on the 1.8 is a bad power output stage (aka ignition module). Have the code read & if it's a cylinder #2 misfire it's definitely the module.
