gluing surround back to the cone?

ok, I got an alum12Q as a replacement for my 12X that bfired, and now this one sounds good, hasnt blown. it still sounds really good but today i popped my trunk to show it to someone and i hear all sorts of snappimng sounds, so i turned it off and looked and all the way around the cone the surround is no longer glued except for a 2 inch part, I am thinkign of using this zap-a-gap stuff i got for RC cars, it glues anytyhing, well anythign ive tried before on my t-maxx i busted the engine mount and glued cast aluminum together, glues plastic really really good too, I am sure it will grab onto the rubber good, just not so sure of the aluminum cone, although i have dripped it on a quarter and glued another quarter to it and even with a chisel couldnt break them apart. before I tried it though i wanted to s if someone was sure of something that will work good. I have quit playing the sub because i dont ewant to damage it. will it get wtrecked if i continued to play it with no surround?

Re: gluing surround back to the cone?

hrm..not sure if it'll work. The bigger problem i see is the glue eating the surround. The surround has a higher chance of getting hurt than the cone.

Re: gluing surround back to the cone?

I dont think it will hurt the cone, I just dont know if it will adhere to it

Re: gluing surround back to the cone?

You can try this. Drop a bit on the backside of the cone and let it dry. After it does, try to pick it out. If you can't take it out the drop of clue, then it'll probably hold the surround down to the cone. Do it to the back side of the cone so it's not visible.

Re: gluing surround back to the cone?

havent tried it yet. ill post if it does, ive been really busy trying to get moved into this house, I have spent weeks so far cleaning it out , I now have kitchen/living room wired/painted, fansllights installed and the woodstove in, I just gotta lay the kitchen tile and paint the bathroom, my room and a few other things, but I have been focused on this more than the sub, if I had no sound then it would be a priority but I still got the pineer pushing the 6x9's and it sounds alright, I wil probably do it tomorrow though cuz I do miss the bass and I wanna take a while off from that house. Ive been there ALL day EVERY day for a long time.

well I did it today and yep it worked, havent played it much, maybe 30 minutes or so but so far it is holding good. I got it pretty close to where it was factory glued but when I got to the final point to glue down I had a tiny bit extra that I pushed down and glued, not much at all, it just didnt lay perfectly flat right there on its own. it hits so much better now, I didnt really notice it when it hapened but now that its fixed I turned the sub out down from +4 to +1 and the EQ bass down from +5 to 0 and it still hits as hard, not to mention MUCH cleaner now that you dont hear the snapping of rubber to aluminum.

FYI for anyone else having that problem: there are several surround glues out there (guaranteed not to eat your speakers!). i've been restoring vingage PA and instrument speakers for neigh on 8 years now, and replacing surrounds and dust covers is something i do constantly. be careful, though- most of the glues are caustic, so if you use them in an area that isn't ventilated WELL, you could pass out.

and if you think it just gets you high- well, talk to the paramedics that pulled me out of my basement after a long night

Re: gluing surround back to the cone?

lol, mine doesnt give off no fumes like that, that I know of. and it has been working and holding strong, I push the sub harder than I first did and its yet top even break the seal anywhere. I have not come up against ANYTHING that zap-a-gap didnt fix. glues cast aluminum engine mounts, suspension arms (the last two are RC parts, im sure it aint gluing no full size susp arm or nothing, but of course you wouldnt expect it to)

Re: gluing surround back to the cone?

I am gonna get the hig excursions next time around, the alums sound cleaner but the excursions were clean enough for me and I never had a problem with 2 of them, ive had 2 problems and I only have a box for one alum and I have only had both for a total of like 2 weks and i had thew excursions for a while. plus cheaper AND louder
