Installing new car deck

I've been told that I cannot install a new car deck in my 2000 Sunfire without moving the factory deck to the trunk and re-wiring it, because the airbags, alarm system, dome light etc are all connected to it. I wanted to buy a nice Sony deck ($200) but was told that a 2000 Sunfire needs a relocation kit and with all the installation charges, it would eventually come to about $600.

Am I being jerked around, or is this really true?

Your being jerked around go to a real car audio place, and DON"T BUY SONY, buy pioneer or clarion. The deck has its own seperate alarm system which has nothing to do with the car. If they give ya nemore touble tell them where to go

Thanks. I thought so... It really didn't seem right to me that all that work needed to be done.

Thanks again.

Not sure about the Sony unit you are looking at but I know all the Sony's I've messed with are WEAK! I'd look at just about anything else especially the Pioneer or mid level JVC stuff as a good starting put. Yes, the Sunfire has some crap in the radio but there are way around that like this... http://metraonline.com/product.aspx?sku=70-2003T

You're correct about sony for auto gear; there crap. Besides the 2 you've mentioned i like alpine as well. However if the car has a factory alarm system it does certainly go through the factory deck and so do the chime module. If you remove the deck you will have no more factory alarm system and no more door chime when you open the door with the keys in the ignition. Also there is no ignition wire going to the factory deck so i ran a direct wire to the fuse box. There is a kit that cost $100 cdn that will allow you to run the factory harness to the trunk and mount the factory deck to the decklid so everything still works. I didn't in my car and i have no security nor chimes anymore.
