91 Tracker - potential shifter problem
I recently "inherited" this car from my brother. Along with it, I seem to have inherited a few problems. Shortly after I got it, I realized the clutch had gone... but not before I replaced the pedal and cable on my own. I was finally able to afford getting the clutch replaced--I didn't have the resources to do it on my own--and now this.... Twice now, when I'm downshifting, the shift lever just suddenly "floats" from side to side WAYYY beyond where it should, and I can't "find" any of the gears. (I'm relatively new to driving stick, but I know that should not be happening!) Thankfully, both times, turning the car off and back on again seems to reset whatever went wrong, and I can shift just fine again. But I'm worried that some day that won't work. What the &*#$! is going on? Any ideas?

Sounds like a bad motor mount, or improperly installed tranny to me. Take it back to the shop that did the clutch, and have them make sure all the motor mount bolts are in place. Your tranny could also need new synchros.
