RPM fluxuation?

Hey there, I don't know if this is the right forum, I couldn't really find a "troubleshooting" forum. Anyways, I was having some problems with my engine lately. Just sitting in park, the RPMs would flux between 300-1000, then as it got close to stalling, would skyrocket to about 2500 RPM. Repeat. Sometimes it would go to the point of flat out stalling, especially when I went from drive to park.

I'm thinking the engine is not getting the fuel it needs, but I'm really lost. I tried to short out the engine lights but nothing came up, and the service engine light never comes on. Anyone have any thoughts?

The idle air valve is opening and closing to compensate for...something wrong. Scan the ECM for codes. There might be a oxygen sensor or throttle position sensor that has gone bad. It would be a good idea to remove the throttle body and clean it up including the idle air valve with some carb cleaner and a toothbrush.

Re: RPM fluxuation?

On another forum someone mentioned the possibility of a crankshaft positioning sensor gone wrong. The ECM hasn't shown any codes in awhile, but I'll reset tonite and try again. Thanks for all the info.
