Speaker Problems!

1990 Civic Si Hatchback

I have 2 way Sony speakers in the doors, and Sony 3 way speakers in the back. When I put the balance all the way to the front, the sound is good, lots of bass and stuff. Balance halfway between the front and back and it still sounds ok, but it's mostly coming from the front. If I put it all the way to the back, it sounds like it's only the mid range working and not the high or low end and technically the 3-ways should be better sounding than the 2-ways at the front.

The 3-ways are hooked up with 2 wires, one blue and one red, and even if I switch the wires over it sounds exactly the same. In fact, sound comes out only when I hook up the red, so effectively the blue wire is doing nothing.

Please help! Thanks

Re: Speaker Problems!

check your wires going into your headunit and if there is no problem there i would make sure the wire is not cut or something on the way back to the speakers.

you definitly need to verify your connections first, and make sure that the HU/amp you have is rated for those speakers... BUT:

with the HB speaker location, which (i think) is the same on your 90 as my 96 HB, your bass response in the back won't be as good as the bass response in the front. this is because the materials the door is made with (sound dampning materiel, steel, glass, etc...) are more dense then the materials the rear is made of (interior plastic, etc...). the heavier materials don't flex as much, and don't allow as many extrenious and harmonic sound waves to remain. the result is a purer, louder, deeper bass.

one solution to this is to relocate your rear speakers to custom-made boxes, bypassing the stock rear locations completely. you could also coat the interior of the rear speaker locations with a sound dampening material, such as dynamat.

the third option (and one i chose) is to build a speaker box INSIDE the stock location, so the speakers are in the same spot, but have a box within the interior body. the only thing to make sure on that is that you have the necessary volume for the speakers you are mounting.

anyone who has any convincing data to the contrary- please post! i'm trying to build a stock-looking sound system, and need all the help i can get
