knocking/pinging/ticking @ start up.
I live in Ohio and it is now cold. I have noticed that when I start my car (after the engine has completely cooled down) there is a slight knock/ping/tick. It only does this until it warms up. If I drive before it warms up, when I come to a stop, it is worse.
Is this normal? Just cold? Oil level is perfect. Oil pressure is within specs.

how many k does your car have, mine does this too but i,ve been told its due to Miles/kms causing bearing wear not allowing the journals to seat the cams and crankshafts right you get more play between the bearing and the working part so when the engine is cold it gets smaller(contract) due to the cold causing that gap to become bigger and when you start you car it kinda slams the crankshaft onto the bearing making apinging noise kinda like knocking steel with a hammer. hope that helps the reamydy that i was told was to change the bearings and regrind the crank shaft i'm not sure if thats what you need

Uhhh, I'm gonna disagree.
Take it to you local dealership or certified mechanic and have them cold start it & listen to the sound. I'd bet you just need a valve adjustment (30-60 min of labor). The cam and rockers and valve tip wear down, and the adjustment bolts come loose, leaving the rocker loose when the valve is closed. So when the cam comes around again, the rocker flies through the air until *BAM* it slams into the valve tip. In regular operation, it should just rest lightly on top of the valve and the cam should smoothly push it open. Once the engine warms up, all the metal expands just enough to eliminate that extra play, so the noise stops. As time goes by, the ticking will get louder and the engine will have to be hotter before it quiets. Out of adjustment valves make a very characteristic clicking / knocking / tapping sound, and they hurt both your MPG and top-end power. When were they last adjusted? It's conceiveable that the knocking is something worse, but get the valves checked first!

Actually, they have not been adjusted since I swapped it in...The engine has about 60,000 on it. I think I will just do it anyway (time to break out the Helms).
Is this possibly hendering performance? If so, I can't wait to fix it tomorrow.

Well duh...you already answered whether or not it henders performance. Just so you know it is NOT knocking...I don't know why I put that in there.

I have a good mech friend that has done alot of work on hondas and both my 130K DX and my dads 60KLX "mine 95 his 98" both knock when you first start the car up and its not the valves well maybe his
anywho my mech has talked about a common problem with honda engines when they get a few miles on them the wristpins tend to knock some but once the engine heats up they stop doing it Im pretty sure thats what my engine does its done it for about a year and even after valves have been checked only when its cold does it do it but first things first if its the valves or not you should do them just because its something that should be done anyways I would say atlest everyyear Jeff |
