Angry My exhaust is weird...help.

Ok, got stock factory headers, brokin in h-pipe (cheaper), and 2 chamber flowmasters with turndowns. Now, why in the world does my exhaust get quiet and sound like shit after 2,600 rpms? My 82' GT didnt do that(it had a 86 motor in it). I dont understand why every other car gets louder like it should and mine gets quieter. Help is wanted. Thanks

yeah my exhaust is wierd too, i only have 1 muffler, 1 pipe, 1 header... oh yeah, that's right, i have a 4-banger =P. which i got running yesterday btw, so now i own my first DRIVABLE stang =).

anyway, you got me stumped (which ain't hard). it's really difficult to judge car noises of any type without actually hearing them.

I just recently bought my first fox bodied mustang and i`m right there with ya. Stock headers and h-pipe with cats. flowmaster cat back. Mine`s a 5 speed though and the lower the rpm`s are the better it sounds to me at least. (better being louder) But i also feel that it`s louder because of interior resonance. The more rpm`s i develop the louder it is inside the interior and not just on the exterior. I have flowmaster 40`s with delta flows on my 66 galaxie which has a 390 4 barrel and it does not sound as aggressive in the interior.

Guys what your describing kinda sound like what Flowmasters do they don't tend to get much louder in the higher RPM's... around 2,500rpm sounds almost the same as 5,000rpm's. It's there design and purposefully done.

Yeah, not to mention that what your hearing is more of drone that is caused by low rpms, and its decibel levels are more noticeable to the human hearing.

But like GTStang said, Flowmaster don't change in should as rpms increase. Dynomax and Magnflow both get louder as rpms increase.

Re: My exhaust is weird...help.

I have almost the exact setup as you do on my 98gt.
Bassani Xpipe, Flowmaster Catbacks (American Thunder)...now, when I first put them on, they weren't very loud at all, but after a few weeks/months of driving and "wearing" them in they increased in loudness and now sound great.
They won't be as loud as some Mufflers/pipes, but they get way better flow and HP gains because of their design. IMOP only....

Remember, loudness doesn't necessarily mean badassness........or something like that...lol

Thanks for the info, i'll try different mufflers in the future to see which one i like the best. I dont like flowmaster any more It sounds great at idle and between 2,600rpms, but then again i'm usually not between those rpms....

Re: My exhaust is weird...help.

No dude don't get rid of the Flows. Mustangs and Flowmasters are made for one another. It will never sound the same with another brand muffler that I've seen. What you need even though it is a more expensive alternative is a manual tranny. I've had C-4's, AOD's, and have a five speed now. Manuals sound better. Also a gear in the back would also be a contributing factor in noise change at different rpm's

Try these.......they are for mustangs and may be just what u are looking for.......I woul still keep the Flowmasters. Did you get the "American Thunder Version" or the "Force 2" ---AM Thunder is louder.....

Hint--- order a free Summit Racing Equipment catalog from Summitracing.com and see the camparisons between different mufflers.....

at 55 mph with a C-4 tranny are you running the same about of rpm's as you are with a 5 speed. I thought not. and for dynomax's, around here people put those on Hondas, Beetles, mopeds etc.
