Motor Trend Magazine names Chevrolet Avalanche 2002 Truck of the Year
December 28, 2001

Motor Trend Magazine announced today the selection of the Chevrolet Avalanche as Motor Trend's 2002 Truck of the Year. The award-winning Chevrolet Avalanche was unveiled at the 2002 Arizona International Auto Show.
Motor Trend's editorial staff selected this year's winner after conducting 10 rigorous tests on six trucks. In identifying the winner, factors including engineering, powertrain, payload, performance, interior, safety, quality, special features, livability, and overall value were evaluated. Including both domestic and import manufacturers, the six contenders were the Cadillac Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Dodge Ram pickup, GMC Sierra 1500HD Crew Cab, Sierra Denali Quadrasteer, and Lincoln Blackwood. To compete for Truck of the Year, models must be on sale in North America by January 1, 2002.

"From the onset, we knew the Avalanche was a solid contender," said Motor Trend's Editor-In-Chief Kevin Smith. "After two weeks and thousands of miles with this year's competitors, evaluating every aspect, nuance, feature, and crevice, the Avalanche stands out as this contest's most significant truck. With its outstanding powertrains, off-road and towing prowess, smooth on-road driveability, and passenger/cargo-space flexibility, the Chevrolet Avalanche has proven itself a solid choice."

"The Motor Trend Truck of the Year is one of the most coveted and most recognized awards in the automotive industry. We're especially honored that the Avalanche has been named 2002 Truck of the Year because the testing is so demanding," said Ed Schoener, Chevrolet Avalanche Brand Manager. "The 2002 honor marks the seventh time in eight years that Chevrolet has won annual vehicle awards from Motor Trend."

The complete report on the 2002 Truck of the Year is in the February issue (on sale January 9). Television coverage of the testing will be on Speedvision in January, and on Motor Trend's two 2-hour syndicated weekend radio shows hosted by Alan Taylor in over 150 markets.

The Avalanche 2500 comes with the 8.1 liter. Mine is a 2500 and the 8.1 liter engine is STRONG. I tow a 6500 pound boat and you can hardly tell it behind you. This motor has excellent power and torque. The only thing I don't like is that the wheels are only 6.5" side and do not allow for putting larger tires on without changing them. At least the 1500 Avalanche had 7" wheels. But I really enjoy my 2500.

Thumbs up best truck on the market

I recently purchased an '04 Avalanche without the body cladding and I have been very pleased with mine. Matter of fact I was a Ford man and was just waiting for the '04 Supercrew to come out. When it did I wasn't that impressed. What in the world can you do with that little bed and the dash was straight across and flat. When you sit in the driver's seat of the Avalanche you feel like you are sitting in cockpit. I really liked the way the Avlanche's backseat converts the bed into an 8'3" bed. Before I test drove the Avalanche I just knew that it would take 40 acres to turn it around. I found out after testing driving the Supercrew and the Avalanche that the Avalanche actually has a smaller turning radius. There are a lot of other things such as the better leather package, more comfortable captain chairs, satellite radio, radio redundancy on the steering wheel, and much more.

The only thing that I wish Chevy would have done was added a reversing sensor system. There are times when it is difficult to backup in a tight parking lot. I have found aftermarket sensors on ebay for $49 - $89. I was wondering if anyone has bought anything like this and has installed it. I know of one guy that bought one and likes it so far. The only thing is that I don't want to run out and buy one until I see how well his does over a few months.
