The ECU will probably function with the motor, but remember the pre-programmed values are meant for the B18 motor, so running rich or lean is a possibility as well as other factors. If it was not for a B18 with VTEC then it will not be aware of VTEC for your motor. Which B18 motor did the ECU come from? What number is the ECU unit?

Re: b16 with b18 computer

I believe that's a '94-'95 Integra GSR ECU. It's air/fuel tables and preprogrammed values are meant for a 1.8 liter with a different VTEC engagement point (don't forget about the dual runners in the intake manifold). I don't remember if the GSR has a higher redline or not. It will probably work, but I don't know what effect it will have on your motor in the long run.

The USDM OBD1 B16A motor uses the P28 ECU. I believe the JDM and OBD2 B16A motors use the P30 ECU.

Which head & ECU would you want to use if you were creating a B20 VTEC (AKA crvtec) or LS/VTEC?

Re: b16 with b18 computer

Neither. The LS/VTEC and CR/VTEC hybrid motors aren't known for long-term reliability. At least not in my experience.

Reliability issues aside, which head/ECU combo would give you the most power?

Re: b16 with b18 computer

Ok, well objectively I would choose one of these three heads if you can find them for reasonable prices: B16A, B16B, B18C5

These are the best flowing heads stock. Otherwise grab a GSR head and you can always port/polish later. But the GSR intake manifold is desined for dual-runners which can be a pain or a nuisance and I'm not sure if a B16 intake manifold fits properly on a GSR head. For simplicity I would choose one of the three I listed above.

Regarding the ECU, I would pick an ECU pre-programmed for VTEC. In my opinion, I think it would be better to select the ECU that matches the head you are mating to the block. And due to the parts interchangeability of the B-series motors, it really doesn't matter in the long-run which head internals you have since you can always swap in those that you want.

Your signature states you have a Del Sol VTEC. Might as well use the head and ECU you already have. Saves money and the parts are readily available.

Re: b16 with b18 computer

If you already have a Del Sol VTEC then all you need to do is get a LS crankshaft and rods then you will have the exact same thing as a LS/VTEC but with the B16 block. It would be a much better choice. Or if you want the B20/VTEC then bore the B16 block to 84 mm and install a LS crankshaft and rods then you have 2.0 liters of displacement and VTEC.

Plastic - That's what I wanted to hear. Thanks.

whtteg - Do you know anyone who has done this? I don't mean to sound skeptical, but I've never hear of this approch in all my research -- and as you've probaly found out from these forums, there are a lot of rumors that just aren't true. If it is true and the resulting motor is strong, I'll go buy a shit car tomorrow so I can bring in my Del Sol to a machine shop. I'll have them rebuild the whole motor.

Thanks for both of your help.

I don't know anybod that has done it but think about it like this: The B16 block has the same bore as the B18C, B18B etc. The lack of displacemnet is due to the shorter stroke to help give the B16A a near perfect r/s ratio. Now you can buy a stroker kit fom crower etc and stroke it to some crazy stroke or you can get a LS or even a GSR crankshaft and rods and have the same stroke as the B18 motors. The GSR crankshaft will yeild a 87.2mm stroke with a 137.9mm rod length and a 1.58 r/s ratio. The LS crankshaft and rods will yeild a 89mm stroke with a 137mm rod length and a 1.54 r/s ratio. Now the B16A has a 77mm stroke with a 134mm rod length and a 1.74 r/s ratio. All the motors have the same 81mm bore. All you need to do is make sure the deck height is the same or compensate for it. I don't know off the top of my head what the deck height is but I can find out more details for you and tell you for sure or not if it will work without any aftermarket pistons. That will be the only question about if it will work or not, you might have to buy some aftermarket pistons. I will let you know as soon as I find out.

If I have to buy new pistons, thats no big deal its still a lot cheaper than what I was planning.

Any info you can get me is greatly appriciated.
