engine revs but trans doesn't shift when cold
I have a '95 GJC @188K miles. I found
that accelerating revs up rpm but not speeding up when engine is cold. After a few minutes of driving it becomes normal and drives like new. Any symptom of my GC going to the yard? it has never visited the shop other than AWD axle replacement and routine maintenance. Thanks. S. |

How much damage is that gonna be to fix?

tranny
I have a '99 with 75K with the same issue. I let it warm up in neutral, and it seems to help a little. It also leaks! This is what I get (as usual) for buying used.

That's true, it started when I noticed black oil
drips on driveway. So the seal is bad... and what could be leaking, trans oil? |

Re: engine revs but trans doesn't shift when cold
The best way to tell what fluid is leaking is by placing a sheet of white cardboard under the truck. Tranny oil "should" be red. Motor oil "should" be light brown. If any oils appear dark brown, or black.....shame on you.

I have 93 Grand Chek and this started happening after we took it in for the 90K service where they replaced all the fluids and inspected the trans. Never had the problem before then. Fun to pay $800 for service and come away with a problem. I just drive easy for a mile or so and it goes away. I don't have any leaks anywhere and some where I read about it being a know service problem. I think this dealer used the bug to get people to go back and pay more $$$. I stopped going there and am going to do my own.

Re: engine revs but trans doesn't shift when cold
They didn't do it intentially, see I took my JGC to a AMCO transmission place to get checked out and they couldn't find anything wrong (they hadn't took anything apart yet) and I asked if they could at least change the tranny oil and they said that may make things worse or create a problem, w/o knowing the problem it is very bad to change the oil, so the oil shouldn't have been changed on your jeep.

Re: engine revs but trans doesn't shift when cold
Sorry I'm just remembering this now. I read in a service manual that you are supposed to adjust the first gear and revers gear bands when changing the oil. One of them can be done with the pan on, the other is inside the pan. Of course I read this after I changed the fluid and filter.

Re: engine revs but trans doesn't shift when cold
If changing the fluid does cause this problem I wonder if there is something that can be added to the fluid to help....like some seal swelling additive or something.

Re: engine revs but trans doesn't shift when cold
I had the same problem with my 98 GC limited. Had the dealer check it out, seen no problems and told me that they had to take the tranny apart. Instead I had my tranny fluid changed and the problem went away. I know someone with a 2000 GC and he had the same problem not sure what the dealer fixed but the problem went away as well.

Re: engine revs but trans doesn't shift when cold
This all started AFTER the dealer did a complete go thru of the jeep at the cost of $800. It was the 90k check up and service. They said they changed the fluid. I wonder now if they used the right kind.

My '93 GC did the same thing. It was the beginning indication of the trans seals failing. I had the trans rebuilt @ 163K. Sometimes, if the Jeep is put in reverse and backed up for several feet it will help correct the slipping, delayed shifting, problem temporarily. If this works it might also indicate a weak trans pump. I drove my JC like this for a year before having the trans fixed. Don't go to the junkyard for a fix unless you are going to get rid of your Jeep. You will be buying something unknown and not saving all that much in the end.
