Re: Stang Owners take on the Drifting scene

I think it does take skill, and I'm sure there are mustang owners who could compete. Especially some of us who live in the snowy parts of the country. All it takes is practice, and I think with the torque we have we *could* be competitive.

Re: Stang Owners take on the Drifting scene

the only thing that the mustang lacks is lightness. its weighs too much compared to cars like Ae86's and RX7's. even though heavy cars like Supras and Soarers (SC430's) are great drifters. but those cars make more overall power than AE86's and 240's.

Re: Stang Owners take on the Drifting scene

Well for drifting the Mustang is probably ideal with the heavy front and light rear! Plus the power to break the rear end out on demand. I rally cross a 4 cylinder Mustang which becomes surprisingly predictable after the rear sway bar is removed.

To be honest I think drifiting is retarded. It is just doing what American Muscle/Pony cars have been doing for years on the street to show off and given some more focus. I have no interest or care at all... but that's just how I feel about it and I have no problem with some1 who is into it. To each his own......

always nice to see another initial d fan on this board =)

given that the afore-mentioned show is what got me into cars and roadracing, i love drifting, think it's a great show. but a show is all it is mostly: it has little application in actual racing outside of rally. unless, of course, you're racing against only other drifters, where it all comes down to vehicle and skill.

and for you domestics-don't-drift guys, i've seen guys drifting Vipers and such at primarily domestic street races in the dearborn area.

Re: Stang Owners take on the Drifting scene

Most Definitely I have a 96 Stang 3.8 With lot of mods I won't mention unless you ask. But when you can punch it in 2nd gear and still put yourself sideways in the middle of the road and seemingly keep drifting it's all good. And For anyone who thinks a Mustang is to heavy just hasn't made the proper mods yet.

What's the difference between drifting and power-sliding?

Ive drifted the GN before...... it was kinda gay. just felt like a normal powerslide . Personally I feel if you need to drift to get a rush then you are not going fast enough down the strip

I guess I've been "drifting" through the streets of Los Angeles many years before these kids were spinning out on their "Big Wheels".

Domestic guys have been "drifting" for years we just don't give it a name and call it a sport or a type of racing. We just call it showing off or if your on a road course FUCKING UP! You said it yourself it's really just showing-off. So of course there a Vipers "drifitng" at street races. And I guess I've been a drifter way back when I had my 83 Stang before it was cool and mainstream to "drift".

power slide = step on the gas just before the exit of a corner, breaking the rear end free and losing control

drift = steer hard at the entrance of a corner, break all 4 wheels free, and exit the corner at the angle of the next straightaway

yes there's a difference between powerslide and drift, drift takes actual skill =)

but like i said, as far as practicality goes, it's either a showpiece or a skill test between drifters
