how to build the engine

Ok so I've had an interest in the mazda rotary for quite a while now. I've also tried countless web searchs to find out how they work and so on, but I haven't been able to find the information I need to rebuild one. I was thinking I could go to the junkyard and find a rotary to tear down and try to reassemble. The only source though I've been able to find that may give me the specs I need is the shop manuel, but I've never gotten the chance to check one out before. I'm enrolled to go to Wyotech in Oct., but seeing that the rotary is such a small part of the auto market I doubt they will do more than just mention that they are out there. Thanks for the help.

Re: how to build the engine

As a former owner of 3 rx 7's there is not a whole lot to rebuilding the engine..In fact there are only 3 moving parts in the motor..the hard part of rebuilding is finding the equipment to resurface the rotor housings. the mazda shop manual tells just about everything you need to rebuild it..the kit is only 100 bucks from napa too... But im not sure of what specks you need...there are only a few rotary motors out there...12a 13b (fa, fb , fc) ..just make sure you label the housings before you split them apart...take it apart from front to back and assemble from back to front..

thanks for the info guys. I found that web site before and found the teardown procedure very informative, but unfortunatly the build up hasn't been finished. Maybe I can e-mail them and get more info.

Re: how to build the engine

http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/index.htm

Will give you a complete shop guide, and many related readings for the RX7.

And an FA was the very first model of RX7 to come out. 1979-1980 were called FA's i beleave. 1981-1985 were the FB's. FC's were from 1986-1991 and FD's were from 1993-1995.

The FC came in 2 variants. The S4 build and S5. There were very few changes made to the FD, none as drastic as previous models.

yeah I e-mailed a few people and they told me a mazda service manuel and Overhauling Mazda's 13B Rotary Video 2nd Editionby Bruce Turrentine is all the information I need to rebuild the engine. I'll probably buy the video sometime in the next couple weeks. Exciting stuff.

Re: how to build the engine

no the first series of the 1st gen RX-7 was the SA22C
Not an "FA"

the SA22, FB, FC, FD, etc is derieved from the factorys chassis designation for the car which is located in the VIN number

it is just a coincidence that 1981 model year RX_7 switched to series 2, and the US adopted the 17 digit VIN # system.

You can get the video from atkinsrotary.com. The full service manual is a must.

Re: how to build the engine

tearing one down and putting it back together so it all moves is easy.

Now get more than 10k out of it and there is the test :P
There are various rebuild kits, which come with full lenght videos that cover almost everything you need to know about it and all i hear about them is grear stuff.

Agreed, I'd have never been able to get mine assembled without it. Gives you the lowdown on specs and tolerances. Awesome video!
