i would think that they dont die alot. i would think that they would last a long time. i would think the best one would have to be the tsi. well that is the one that i would go for.

actually...
There's 3 different engines (all 3 are reliable unmodded):
420a- 2.4L Chrysler engine (found in the Eclipse Spyder) 4G64- 1.8L SOHC Mitsubishi engine (base model talon/eclipse/lasers) 4G63- 2.0L 16-Valve DOHC (in turbo/non-turbo high/mid-model T/E/L's) The 4G63 is capable of producing roughly 400hp on stock internals. That is double the stock horsepower (turbo'd). Chrysler's 2.4L engine is also able to be modded to make some good power. Base models with the 1.8L are for economy, they are reliable as well. As long as you take care of it and change the timing belt every 60k miles you'll have a good car

420A is the 2.0L 2G N/T engine, not the 2.4L, I dont know the engine code for the 2.4L, but who really cares anyways
4G63 is the 1G&2G Turbo engines and the 1G N/T engine.

I have a 97 ESi and i have been impressed. I bought it last December with 77K miles on it and now it has close to 84 and I have had no problems with it yet. The ESi has a great look to it with the front air dam and the big wing. The 420A it has in it has awsome potential, mods are easy to find. When it comes to turbocharging the 420, it is a little trickey. If you want to put in a large turbo space can be a problem. To get more space relocate your battery to the trunk. It's a pain in the rear but not to hard, just time consuming. (4G63's can be swapped its hard to do but it can be done)
If you are going to look into the TSi the AWD is a MUST! We had one up at the shop that ran upper 11's in the 1/4. It had been upgraded to a twin turbo, (i can't remember the type of turbo's they were) but they were the BIGGEST i have ever seen. This car had trouble holding it's transmition, and it seemed to bust the engine mounts every weekend at the track. Thats how powerfull this machine was. The TSi AWD is an amazing creation and it's all powered by the 4G63. |

Have you seen a 4G63 swap into a 2G NT?
The 420A has awesome potential? The 4G63 has 100X more potential, I wouldnt waste time or effort on the 420A

I've seen it done *shrug*. I was going to swap my 420 for the 4g63 until I talked to a guy that was running 12's with his. It's relativley simple actually. Hey, mine is a project. If it fails it fails, then ill put the 4g63 in there and see what happens. But don't underestimate the 420.

Ya, if you could find out who makes a kit to drop the 4G63 into a 2G NT thatd be great, I know a few people are looking to do this. The question has come up a few times in the Eclipse forum

Hahn makes and even BIGGER kit for the same engine.......
Model: TDO6H20G-TDO5H10CM2 Boost Range: 10-30 PSI HP Range: 300-500 Max. CFM: 680 Compressor Inducer / Major Diameter: 2.075" / 2.675" Turbine Exducer / Major Diameter: 1.930" / 2.200" For up to 500 HP use, the DSM Super 20G is unmatched in terms of economy and easy installation. Specially machined for true-bolt in use, this unit fits right the first time, with no grinding or crushing of surrounding components to create adequate clearance. The coupling of a TDO5H-10CM2 turbine with the popular TDO6H-20G compressor creates a turbo that spools quickly for a unit with such large HP capability. Very streetable, will support 350HP @ 15 PSI boost with 93 octane fuel. http://www.turbosystem.com/hahn/parts/s20g.htm |
