just baught a r32 gts-t and wonder what motor mods to do
I just resently baught a r32 gts-t, its coming in may from japan, so until then was wondering what mods i should do to the rb20det.
or should i save up and do a rb25det swap. witch would be better. if anyone can lend some help it would be great. plus any ideas of what mods to do to get the rb20det to about 300 or 350 hp that would be awesome. Thanks alot Jarrett Bond |

hmmm, I'm not sure on this so if anyone out there will correct me i've got no problem with that but I think the rb20det came with around 214bhp@6600rpm at the flywheel stock didn't it? The Rb25DET i believe came with 250bhp@6400rpm. The rb25det also had more torque than the rb20 so its better in that aspect and since it has more power to begin with it will be easier to reach your goal of 300-350hp. well, to get another 80hp shouldn't be that hard from an rb20DET as long as you're willing to spend the cash, just put in a bigger turbo, boost controller, watersprayed intercooler, performance exhaust, extractors, cold air intake, bigger injectors and fuel pump and I think that should put you above your target 300rwhp. However, with the RB20DET pushing aorund 300-350hp I don't think the stock gearbox will be able to withstand this. also, i think its impossible to get 300-350hp with the stock turbo, so a bigger turbo (lots of cash) is a must on an RB20DET to get 300-350horses. don't know about the RB25DET though.
a really good site i found for rb20det is : http://www.rb20det.com/index.html also check out this guys page. He's got an r32 RB20DET pushing 300+hp and its explained how he got there: http://homepages.tig.com.au/~robs/tuning.htm they're both pretty good sites. hope i've helped.

Re: just baught a r32 gts-t and wonder what motor mods to do
Put in an RB25DET, worth every penny. RB20's are crap. At least witht he RB25 you actually have proper 6-cylinder displacement and torque, of course.
theres plenty you can do- Intercooler, Exhaust, Air filters, bigger Turbocharger, Camshafts, ECU, INjectors, fuel pump, blah blah blah................ And the stock handling is pretty crap, so the suspension will need some reworking and maybe some work to the brakes to help them stop the added power you are giving it. I also have a question, what is the wieght distribution of a stock R32 GTSt???? |

Re: just baught a r32 gts-t and wonder what motor mods to do
R32 right through to R34 (and no doubt those that came before as well) are pretty nose-heavy, with a big cast-iron boat anchor of an engine sitting in the front. That's why the V35 has an alloy block sitting further back (easier to do, since it's a V6 not inline); it has a 52-48 F to R weight distribution.
I wouldn't say the RB20 is crap; there are plenty pushing good power, and going very quickly. However, the RB25's higher displacement and compression means it's more what I want. It's better to lug around off boost if you feel lazy, and it'll spool up a big turbo more readily than an RB20. R32 GTS-t had 160-odd kW at the engine, which is some 214 HP (at the engine) R33 GTS25t had 184kW (engine), which is 246 HP. The series 2 wasn't quoted at any more power, but our experience is that they do seem to be more powerful. When my car was dynoed standard, the guy doing it reckoned from his experience, the power at the wheels indicated around 195 kW at the engine, or 261 HP. It's not much of a step from that to 300. A decent exhaust and air filter will raise your boost a bit as well as providing better flow in general, and you'll start going much quicker. In fact, with just a cat-back 3" exhaust and pod filter (unshielded) I got up to what was probably nearly 290 HP (estimate from power at the wheels), and since getting rid of the cat (response and boost both went up a tad), and getting the air flow meter fixed up, it goes even better, so must have a bit more again.

Re: just baught a r32 gts-t and wonder what motor mods to do
Of course moondog only minor mods to an RB20 can be quite potent! I distinctly remember a 1991 GTS-t that was more than capable of entering the motorway at 100k's sideways and still accelerating scaring the holy crap out of a comadore driver!
Not bad for a mild turbo upgrade, fuel pump, fuel pressure reg, and a good front mount running 14psi of boost. Oh yea nearly knackered the driver and a lovely lady once toooooo.

GTS-T mods for RB20DET
I have owned several skylines with the RB20DET, like Razor said, not a bad engine. Especially for its displacement. How many engines put out over 200 hp and displace just under two litres? Not too many. Also the engine is smooth in delivering power. Mods I would recommend in addition to what has been said are: an HKS 2510 or 2530 ball bearing turbine. It is an improvement over the stock ceramic turbine and delivers power around your area of interest of around 320 hp and potentially more depending on how far you want to go with the engine.

Re: just baught a r32 gts-t and wonder what motor mods to do
i rekon keep the rb20 and throw the money for the 2.5 at it,keep it simple, the exhuast, filter, 12-13 pounds of boost, intercooler and chip.
anymore than that and youll have to fork out for up-rated fuel delivery stuff

That car of yours was a fewkin' monster. Very nasty. For anyone who hasn't heard, Razor's previous Skyline was virtually incapable of hitting boost without going sideways. In fact, scratch the "virtually"
