98 intrigue engine light

Hi all, new to this forum. My 98 intrigue "service engine soon" light came on while I was driving yesterday. The next time I drove it the light was flashing for a while and then it just went on steady. I tried to start it this morning and it cranked a couple times before it would start (but it is freezing here in Chicago). It is idling funny, there is a low grinding noise coming from the engine. Any ideas? Anyone know how to get the codes? I know it will probably have to go to a mechanic but I don't want to risk my car dying on the way there-it is hella cold!!

It's been some time, so this may or may not help you, but my engine light came on (and I heard rattling/grinding) when my alternator was on it's deathbed...I live in the burbs of Chicago and I might be able to help you find parts for your car rather inexpensively. You can contact me at [email protected]. The place to get parts depends on what part you need. I've had pretty good luck finding parts at various shops for much less than dealer pricing and it's an easy car to work on for the most part.

Had same problem with my intrigue. The service engine light would come on, the car would start overheating and making weird noises. We would have to shut her off. This was 2 weeks after we got it. After looking at it, we found the one of the belts were loose.
