Revell Hummer H1 *progress*

OK, so we all know Revell Hummer H1 is a terrible kit, snap tite, poorly molded and the whopping 20 pieces in the kit which makes it kinda of simple to say the list.

I am going to modify it as a off-roader and try to make it as realistic as possible... mostly because its the only Revell kit on the market

Ok so on with the progress.. this is the lovely kit... did I mention that the body is molded in RED plastic??

Here are some scratch built items... some extra PIAA off road lights for the front brush guard. a new winch with actual jewelers chain, new gas caps (these are going to be screw on/offs) side view mirros, top nerf bar and side steps.

Close up of the new exhaust stack, lights and scratchbuilt winch:

This is the lovely and very red body with holes opened for fuel caps, step bar attachments and mirrors:

Bits and pieces test fitted on to the body:

I am going to be looking into the option of opening a door or two... perhaps a few more surprises

How about it so far?? come on help me out with some ideas...

Looks good so far, your winch is awsome!, but my suggestion would be to pull the side steps (nerf bars) up closer to the vehicle, they look a little to low IMO, nice stuff so far though

Re: Revell Hummer H1 *progress*

You went from the very sleek and aero Toyo to this brick!

Looks like a neat project, the mods you have going are cool. This is one of those models that you have to attack with the proper attitude, and you did. You looked at the kit and saw it's potential rather than it's limitations.

Realistic finishes will be what makes this model work and you proved to have all the necessary skills.

Agreed! Not all snap kits are crap. Just most.

Attention to detail will bring out a beauty! Please tell us what non-red-red-reddy-red color it'll be...

Re: Revell Hummer H1 *progress*

Thanks for the support everyone. The level of detail on the castings is quite soft so I would like to do a non complicated single color scheme so that whatever details there are would not get lost in the paint.

I am thinking of light gunmetal with flat black canvas top and black interior.... light gunmetal goes on easy and has great coverage, so I think I will stick with it... wish me luck.

Looks like you got your work cut out for you! But it should be great. It seems to be coming along well, so far at least. I agree about the side steps, they are too low and too far out for an off-roader. Even if they go no further down than the chassis or axles, keep in mind when off road there isn't a nice paved shoulder, and those things could get rather nastily torn off. Personally, I would go without, but for the sake of realism you might want to reign them in a little. Otherwise, you've got something great coming and I can't wait to see it. I'd love to see opened doors, and any thoughts on opening the grills in front of and on top of the hood? Do a little engine detail and you'll have a beaut. Are you going to make a snorkel to go with that exhaust stack? Wee, talk about a fun project, a good chance to let your hair down! So to speak.

Re: Revell Hummer H1 *progress*

I'd go with a dark green or even black for the body. I think the green is the best choice

Updates time. I opened up the grill openings and opened up the headlights (going to change these to the option off road lights) sprayed my first primer coat and this is what it looked like

see the mold lines?? so out came the sanding sticks and another shot of primer to smooth everything out... then I applied the first coat of paint (plati-coat Hummer H1 Sunset pearl) original Hummer paint... I think it looks very nice:

The great thing about Plasticaot paint is that the coverage is excellent! Thanks to Antonio for all the tips of using Plasti-Coat type of paints. The bad thing is that the paint goes on dull... you can see that the paint is dull and lack luster..

So Tamiya clear fixes that problem:

check out the shine!

how is that for color?? the top is going to be tan canvas....

Now, that's the color for an H1! Very cool idea SLK. Looks to be an awesome project. Probably would look cool just stock height without the stepbars, but that's my opinion. Keep up the cool work.
