Walking Crank

This is my first time un this forum so please don't shoot me if someone else already asked or answered this question. I have a 97 GST back in the states that has fallen victim to walking crank. I had it taken to a Mitsu Dealer and they said it would run me $3700 to get it fixed. Is that the going rate for this repair? Also I was thinking of dropping an EVO enigine in it when I get back to the states. Is that even possible? I know the EVO and Eclipse share the 4G63 motor so I was just wondering. Last but not least are is there any hope of Mitsu doing a recall? From what I've read on the net alot or 95-99 Eclipses have come down with this problem. I also read that Mitsu said the problem comes from aftermarket mods done to the cars. I would accept that answer if I had done any mods to my car and it happened. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Walking Crank

$3,700 sounds about right...when i had crank walk my trannie and clutch blew up too went to downshift from 4th to 3rd and the shifter just popped out and wiggled everywhere. (so i got my trannie, clutch and shortblock all repalced....and later on down the road got a FREE brand new turbo because the new oil pump blew) so far i've spent a little over $7,000 on repairs ever since i got this car back in October...*cough cough* LEMON *cough*

Thats way too much
why are you goin to the dealership?
I wont pay more than $800 labour and about $1200 for a engine.
The dealership is pretty much just a middle man, all the do disassemble and re-assemble, then they send the work to other shops. they're just a middle man thats not needed. an You'll be gettin another engine that can possibly crankwalk again.

and no, they wont be a recall becuase not enough cars crankwalked for it to be considered a problem.

do like every one else who crankwalked, Just get a 6 bolt Block

Re: Walking Crank

3700 isnt bad. I was quoted 2700 for the shortblock, and 1300 for labor. I had 3 motors crankwalk, so I know a thing or two about it. Go to the forums in my sig, and see the "sticky" thread on crankwalk in the DSM section of course. IT will answer most of your questions about it.

Re: Walking Crank

For the 'do-not', my engine and turbo replaced cost somewhere around 5000 from the dealership, give or take.

Re: Walking Crank

The best part is, forgot to mention, is the dealer will swap in a shortblock of the same year. And it is more likely to walk than an original motor. Hence the 2nd and 3rd motors walking after the first.
