Ignition key problem

93 grand cherokee. No resistance when key turned and obviously no start. Called dealer said anywhere up to $400. Any ideas/suggestions. Am somewhat mechanically inclined.

The lock cylinder may be broken. Try going to a auto parts store and ask about getting a ignition replacement set. Usually a 5-10 minute job to punch in the old one, pull it out and install the new lock.
