Unhappy need help with 92 v8 rs

I have a 92 camaro, v8 fuel injected. The problem is that after I drive it for about 20-30 minutes, shut it off for an hour, then go back out to start it, it will turn over, act like it's going to idle, then dies. When I re-start, you can hold the gas to the floor and just watch the rpms die. It will do that 5 or 6 times, then it starts up fine. No problems until the next day. I replaced the inline filter, but nothing has changed. no problems with horse power or gas mileage. I have been searching for the past few months for some help, but have found none. Any suggestions on where I should start?

well, if you want my opinion, hmm. that's a tricky one, but not too hard. it could be the fuel pump, or the filter, but you said you changed it. i would be willing to bet that your problem is fuel related. could be clogged injectors. there is a slight chance your timing is off, or maybe the timinggot off enough to show a lack of fuel pressure, but i don't know. other than looking at it... I think it's a fuel problem, but try the easy way first, timing, distrib, and coil, like the other guy said.

BTW, Camaro's Rock!

Re: need help with 92 v8 rs

actually, it dosnt sound like fuel at all. not to be a dick. sounds more like a spark or air problem. more likely spark. with a fuel problem, it either starts, or it dosnt, rarely does it start, then slowly idle down to a stall, and when that is the case, it does it everytime, it dosnt go away. so fuel is fine. could be air, like a dirty IAC valve, or just really carboned up intake, try getting a BG induction service at your local shop. a stuck IAC valve will cause a slow idle down to stall but if you are holding the gas down, and it still does it, its not your IAC, because by pressing the gas you open the throttle body vlaves and let in air. so there goes that. what is most likeley is that you ahve a bad coil, or ICM. it also makes a difference if its TPI or TBI, but without running the car for codes, and being there in person to diagnose the problem, thats the best i can offer, hope it helps.

BTW, Camaro CHICKS ROCK HARDER!!!!!

Re: need help with 92 v8 rs

I am kind of agree with this too, it is most likely an air or spark problem. I would check the computer for codes, if you how to do this and what every code means,or you can take to a shop (the charge 80-$100 for diagnostics) to reveal whether its running reach or lean,if not this must be an electrical or even mechanical problem, before you start spending money on parts that wont have any effect at all. But dont let the shops rip you off and do the work yourself if possible.

Re: need help with 92 v8 rs

you can run the codes yourself with a paper clip. forgot to mention that, look at your Diagnostic link connection, there will be two rows of terminals, from left to right. take the ends of the wire, or paper clip, and wire the top two terminals farthest to the right together. then with a pad and pen at hand, watch your check engine light. it will start to flash. count the flashes, the first will be a code 12, this is normal. it means that the ignition is on, but there is no tach signal. thats why your check engine light turns on when you turn on the key with the engine off. the code 12 will.... flash * pause * flash flash * long pause * Flash * pause * flash flash * long pause * flash * pause * flash flash* it does this for each code, for a code 31 it will.... flash flash flash * pause * flash * long pause * and do that two more times. and it flashes each code three times. when you get back to code 12, you are done. after you do this, post the codes on this thread, and well tell you what they mean. and probly how to fix it.

Re: need help with 92 v8 rs

oh and make sure you get the right two terminals, you can blow relays and fuses if you hotwire the wrong terminals, so basicly to make sure you get the right ones, ignore the lower row of terminals completely, look only at the top row. and wire the two farthest to the right, and wire them together. should be pretty strait forward.

Re: need help with 92 v8 rs

Autozone will do it for free if you don't want to risk anything. But it sounds like your engine is choking to death. Since you have an RS you have a TBI, I've seen the throtle body valves stick shut from carbon deposits and moisture. That could cause your problem because it can free up then stick again. In any event once you get the codes it shouldn't be hard to find, even if you come up with no codes. Make sure to check all your vacum hoses too.

i actually had this problem once b4, i don't know if your's is the same problem but the situations are similar. i checked it out and i had a valve seal leak on the intake valve for cylinder 8. if it is this problem, check your breather and see if oil is getting into the breather cover, assuming u have a tbi that is.... the valve seal leak actually caused the oil to get into my breather and restrict air flow, basically choking my engine.
