Vin Decoding

Hi, I am new to this forum and have a question I am hoping you can help me with. I have a 2002 K-1500 Silverado, extended cab 4wd, with the small v-8 and automatic trans. I have only owned the truck for about a month so am still getting to know it. I also own a 57 Dodge Power Wagon and am trying to determine if the Chevy has the gumption to haul the Dodge on a trailer. The Dodge weighs 5500 lbs. I dont have a weight for the trailer yet. My owners manual says max trailer weight is 6800 lbs with the 3:73 axle and 7800 lbs with the 4:10 axle. I cant seem to find what axle is in the truck, is it in the vin#? Or do I need to crawl under the truck and find an axle tag?
I plan on a tandem trailer with 4 wheel brakes. How will a weight distributing hitch effect the numbers? If this is workable, I will be taking a trip of 2400 miles round trip. Am I nuts?
Thanks, Tim

Re: Vin Decoding

I realize this is an old forum, but anyway....

GT4....3:73

GT5
GT8....4:10

GU6....3:42

Standard Z71 ratio is 3:73

The number is found on the decal in the glovebox. Axle ratio generally starts with a 'G' but not always.
This decal contains a number code for every spec on your truck.
